Andy Turner exudes a calm self-assurance that inhabits the
healthy middle ground between quiet confidence and
complacency. For a man who has ridden a magnificent two-year
stretch of form to become reigning Commonwealth and European
gold medallist over 110m hurdles, this is perhaps
unsurprising. However, when you consider that his
involvement in this summer’s London Olympics seemed to be
hanging in the balance just a week ago, the 31 year-old’s
demeanour is altogether more impressive.

Brits Abroad Revisited: Steve McManaman On Life At Real Madrid

*It’s erring on seven years since we last saw Steve
McManaman muddying his boots as he marauded around the
pitch.*

McManaman may be revered in this country for his nine years
at Liverpool, in a spell which saw him collect an FA Cup and
League Cup winners’ medals, but it is what he did
immediately afterwards that perhaps conjures even greater
memories.

‘Macca,’ as he was affectionately known, became ‘El
Macca’ in 1999 after the midfielder exercised his right to
a Bosman transfer and left Liverpool for sunny Spain to join
Real Madrid.

It was a brave move for such a high-profile player to make
at the time. Since the advent of the Premier League in 1992,
English football’s crème-de-la-crème tended to stay put,
as the country’s top tier gained great around the world.
However, McManaman wanted more.

In becoming only the second Brit behind Laurie Cunningham to
sign for Real, Macca followed in the footsteps of Chris
Waddle, Kevin Keegan and Ray Wilkins in relocating to
foreign lands.

At the time his move was scrutinized, based partly on the
failed exploits of Paul Gascoigne, but McManaman became a
flag-bearer for Brits abroad and helped pave the way for
Michael Owen, Jonathan Woodgate and David Beckham to join
Los Blancos.
