Strettle Lays Down England Marker

David Strettle made it two tries in one and half games for Saracens yesterday and believes his cross London summer move can help catapult him back into England recognition.

The predatory winger, who left Harlequins for Sarries and followed up an outstanding, try-scoring debut last week against Sale with another try in an impressive win at Leeds yesterday, has been included in England’s senior group of 32 players and is one of four wingers alongside current starting XV incumbents Mark Cueto and Chris Ashton, as well as Matt Banahan.

Strettle, who was hampered by a metatarsal fracture in his left foot, has been clear of injury for over a season now, having played in every game bar one for Quins last season. Yesterday’s first start for Saracens, his-back-to back displays for his new club, and the big move have buoyed him.

“I needed a new lease of life and I’ve certainly got it at Saracens,” Strettle explained. “I signed because I was hoping to get more ball on the wing at a side that, as the second half of last season proved, likes its running rugby. Certainly that’s been the case so far from what I’ve seen. I’m really enjoying the work ethic here at Sarries which you always get when you’re surrounded by South Africans.

“Head  coach Brendan Venter’s unbelievably passionate about his rugby and knows the game inside out. The side’s under more pressure this season because of what they achieved last season when few expected them to do so well. This time everyone expects from Sarries which is the kind of club I want to be at.

“It’s very competitive with England right now and in Cueto and Ashton they have two top wingers in possession of the shirt. But I’ve always believed in focussing on your club rugby and the rest will look after itself. I’d hope my chance will come at some point and if it happens I’ll take it.”
