Is Women's Tennis on the Decline?

woz2

The first Grand Slam of the year is under way and everyone is once again discussing tennis. Is Roger Federer past his prime? Can Nadal complete the 'Rafa Slam' and hold all four major titles? Will Murray finally win his first Slam?

There is a whole lot of interest in the men's game where you have two of the greatest players of all time battling it out for titles, plus a host of exciting talent who are trying to dethrone the masters.

Yet, at the same time the women's game is grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons. Take world number one Caroline Wozniacki. There is little doubt that the Dane is an extremely talented player, but how can she be considered the best when she hasn't won a Slam?

Then you have the returning Kim Clijsters, who since coming back to tennis after the birth of her first child has won two US Open titles with comparative ease.

With Venus and Serene Williams playing less tournaments there seems a real lack of special talent in the women's game. Sure there are plenty of exciting players, but none that really stand out.

The Australian Open may only just be under way, but you need just to look at some of the early results to see why many are saying that the women's game is on the decline.

In the very first round you had what sounded like an exciting match-up. Kim Clijsters was drawn against Dinara Safina, a Melbourne finalist in 2009 and  world number one just two years ago.

Safina had struggled with injury in 2010 but the result was still a shock. The Russian became the first former world number one to receive a 'double bagel' 6-0 6-0 defeat at a Grand Slam in the Open era.

Since Ana Ivanovic burst onto the scene and become world number one in June 2008, the title of the world's best tennis player has changed hands a staggering 10 times.

So who is the next women's star? Can Wozniacki prove her talent by winning her first Slam? Or could it be that Britain's own Laura Robson could be the next star?

There certainly appears to be lack of depth to the women's game at the minute so Robson has a good a chance as any to progress and eventually win a Slam.
