It's been a great experience for me to swap my swimsuit for padded shorts and take up cycling!
I'm doing a charity bike in Africa on October 3rd for Sport In Action. The plan is to cycle 280 miles in four days in 40 degree heat, so it's going to be a challenge! But no doubt a good one. I've been doing my cycling training and starting to get the hang of it a bit more. I fell off quite a bit to begin with, but I'm gaining a little bit more confidence on the bike now.
I was extremely lucky to get a bike from Evans Cycles, which is incredible. Having a road bike took me a while to get used to as I've never used a road bike before, but having the right bike has definitely helped on big hills! I bought some padded shorts too to help my sore bum. It was great to go to the store in Nottingham, I got some great advice and it will definitely help me with all the miles to come.
As part of my training, Jo Jackson, Mel Marshall and I had a great opportunity to cycle with about 80 riders as part of British Gas Bikes Britain. We joined them for the day and cycled 62 miles from Leicester to Oldbury. It was pretty difficult, and easily the furthest I've ever cycled, but I was so glad I did it. I met some lovely people and it was also a great way for us to gain some more experience.
The British Gas Bikes Britain trip was in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital and it was a real honour to go to the Hospital during the Olympics. The whole place is so inspirational and what they do is just incredible. I met some amazing kids and really enjoyed chatting to them. They had all been watching the Olympics and it was great to hear their highlights and thoughts.
The action didn’t stop though as I had another busy few weeks before the Big Bike ride in Africa. I had my best friend, Keri-anne Payne's wedding, where I was a bridesmaid. Was so exciting!! Now there is a few more big cycle rides, and even a small holiday abroad as well. I will keep you all updated with my progress!
See you soon!
