Cup Predictions is a Mug's Game.

Posted on 03/01/2010

I was asked on Radio Five Live on Friday for my most likely FA Cup 3rd Round shocks and, like a fool, confidently predicted the following: MK Dons to beat Burnley, Nottingham Forest to see off Birmingham, with longer odds for Carlisle and York getting something out of their trips to Everton and Stoke respectively. The results? 1-2, 0-0, 3-1 and, er, 3-1. The voice of sport strikes again! In my defence who in the world would have predicted a Leeds win at Old Trafford against a Manchester United side that had Rooney and Berbatov up front and the likes of Neville,  Brown and, by the end, Giggs and Valencia on the park? I know Leeds have been going well but we are talking League One here, for goodness sake! To my mind Leeds have always been a big club - even now one could argue they are in the top ten biggest clubs in England - but winning at the Theatre of Dreams is one of the most dramatic cup upsets for many, many years and certainly one your prize punter failed to spot.
