Pocket Rocket's Needs Put Premiership Footballers to Shame.

Jenny Meadows2

Sportsvibe doffs its cap today to Jenny Meadows, AKA "The Pocket Rocket," and not just because she stole the show at the weekend in Birmingham where she won the 800 metres breaking Kelly Holmes's seven-year indoor record in the process. As a result of this she won a $5,000 cheque for her efforts, plus an additional $1,500 for being voted the best performance of the meeting. Now that's not a bad day's work in anyone's language but Jenny was incredibly happy because it meant she and her husband and coach, Trevor, who has decided to go part-time in order to help in his wife's continued improvement, would now have some finances which will make a big difference to their lives and training. Now this is a girl who won a bronze medal in the world outdoor 800 metres last summer in Berlin, and who will travel to Doha in a fortnight's time looking for a medal, at least, at the world indoor athletics championships. In short she is a world-class exponent of her sport. And yet she is excited about the difference £5,000 will make to her career, a sum of money which is less than the top Premiership footballers earn in one day.  This is not a gratuitous pop at footballers. They earn what the market forces depict. But with the 2012 Olympics a little over two years' away,  it makes you think, doesn't it?
