So Much for My Predictions, Jessica!

Jessica Ennis

I was talking to Jessica Ennis yesterday morning before she attended the Sportswoman of the Year awards at the David Beckham Academy near London's O2 Arena. I told her outright that she would picking up the main award. I had come to this conclusion having surveyed the opposition. To my mind the three girls in the running were Jessica, Victoria Pendleton, who had followed up her Olympic sprint gold last year with a world title this year - and that's no mean feat - and Gemma Spofforth, who became Britain's first world champion swimmer for donkey's years. Jessica would claim the award, however, because of her performance in the world athletics championships when she took gold in the heptathlon in stunning fashion. A few hours later the award was presented to Chrissie Wellington, the new world triathlon champion and, to be fair to the awards, she is every bit as deserving in a sport not as high profile as the three other stars mentioned. So much for my predictions! Here's another one. Jessica will finish runner up again, this time in next month's BBC Sports Personality Awards, behind the winner, Jenson Button, but in front of third-placed Andrew Strauss, who will be consoled by collecting the team award after England's Ashes success. Remember, you heard it here first! (Sorry Jenson, I've probably just "Jessica'd" you)!
