It all stemmed from a press conference with Jessica Ennis in Berlin. I suggested to the heptathlete that she should "make a great start and just keep on going." Three days later, having made a great start and carried on going," UK Athletics issued a press release with the headline: "STAFFORD TACTICS WORK A TREAT." It went on to state: "UKA Head Coach Charles Van Commenee today paid tribute to the superb tactics that led to Jessica Ennis' excellent start to the World Championships heptathlon. Ian Stafford made remarks relating to the Sheffield star's approach to the first day's competition but the guidance proved wholly valuable as Ennis stormed into an early session lead. Suggesting that her plan should be to "get a great start and just keep on going" provoked Van Commenee and several key members on team management to hold essential talks with Ennis and a new plan was hatched to take best advantage of this tactical excellence." And so it went on. Well, what can I say? I am only prepared to take a small amount of credit for Jessica's Ennis - no, really, she deserves most of the praise - and do not for a moment think my friends at UKA are being sarcastic.
