Usain, Study My Tape

Screen shot 2011 08 30 at 11.07.07

Well, no doubt about the big shock of the sporting weekend, and I'm not talking about Arsenal's total capitulation at Old Trafford.

No, like everyone else, I settled down on my sofa on Sunday to watch Usain Bolt stroll to another world 100 metres title, only for the Jamaican to false start and disqualify himself.

Why on earth he felt he needed to make such a fast start in a race in which he would have motored past everyone else in the second 50 metres is beyond me, but the sporting world was robbed of one of this planet's current true greats (surely he sits at the high table alongside Lionel Messi, Rafa Nadal, still Sachin Tendulkar and Manny Pacquaio now that Schumacher, Woods and Federer have vacated their seats?) doing what he does best.

What's the betting Usain storms it in the 200 metres and sprint relay in Daegu now? In the meantime maybe Usain should study tapes of yours truly in action, as indeed the rest of you can if you click on Sportsvibe TV and watch me race in the 60 metres sprint in Birmingham a few years back.

Please ignore the final 59 metres, but respect the fact that in two semi-finals featuring 16 world-class athletes (well, 15 and me) I recorded the 5th fastest reaction time. You see Usain, that's called getting it right!
