England Cricket The Pick of 2010

So, farewell 2010, and thank you, as always, for serving up another sporting treat.

Not that it was always good, of course. Ask the England football team after the shambles of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. But in general it's been a great year for British sport.

The England rugby team produced their best performance for seven years in demolishing Australia and suggest more is to come next year, World Cup year. Scotland are coming good, too, and Wales will always be Wales!

The athletes are shaping up nicely for London 2012, with the likes of Jess Ennis, Phillips Idowu, Dai Greene, Mo Farah and Andy Turner all enjoying success at the European Championships.

So too the swimmers - Beccy Adlington, Liam Tancock, James Goddard and Fran Halsall (and diver Tom Daley) in particular - the rowers - likewise Hodge and Reed, Purchase and Hunter, Grainger and Watkins - and the cyclists - take a bow Vicky P, Cav,  Sir Chris and the rest. On the boxing front our magnificent triumvirate of Amir Khan, David Haye and Carl Froch lead the way, we have the McLaren British duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button fighting hard for the world title, and in golf the world number one in Lee Westwood and the US Open champ in Graeme McDowell, who also sunk the Ryder Cup winning putt. Throw in AP McCoy's emotional win in the Grand National (at last) and you see what I mean by another storming year.

But special mention must be made for the England cricketers. World Twenty20 champions and now the retention of the Ashes. They have been, pretty much to a man, magnificent, and they have introduced "The Sprinkler" to the world as well. Let us all hope that this is the start of global domination by England.

A Happy New Year to all of you in sport.
