Two days back from the South African winter and the British and Irish Lions and I was re-introduced to the delights of English summer sport down at my local cricket club at Chislehurst & West Kent. On a sunny Sunday afternoon I played in my first game of the season (I usually manage half a dozen due to professional commitments) and got clean bowled for 4, took a wicket with my slow medium pace that does absolutely nothing when the batsman missed a straight one, and clung on to a catch when the ball was spinning after the batsman sliced his shot uppishly. It wasn't the perfect day but I was kept busy, tucked into the usual high-class spread at tea, topped up my tan, and we won as well! All this on a ground that WG Grace used to play on, and where CB Fry made his cricketing debut. It really was the quintessential English sporting summer's day!
