Vaughan's Big Question

Michael Vaughan

A slightly bemused and frustrated Michael Vaughan revealed over the weekend to me that despite leading England to the greatest Ashes series win over Australia following the most epic and nail-biting five-test series of all time back in 2005, the two most often asked questions put to him have nothing to do with the actual games. "Honestly, you'd think people would want to know more about Freddie's (Flintoff) outstanding all-round displays, KP's (Pietersen) Ashes-winning 150 in the last test, the narrow win by 3 runs at Edgbaston, or Ricky (Ponting) losing his rag at Trent Bridge," said the former Yorkshire and England cricketer when he was guest of honour at a NSPCC charity lunch in Manchester sponsored by Jaguar aiming to raise much-needed funding for the Child's Voice Campaign. "Instead the two questions I get most asked are: "Who pissed in the Prime MInister's garden, and did one of the players really abuse Tony Blair?"" I was chairing a Question and Answer session with Vaughan up on stage and managed to refrain from asking him for the answers to these two most pressing questions for at least three seconds. "The answer to both questions is Matthew Hoggard," responded Vaughan, with a smile. "After taking a leak in the back garden he heard the PM ask why there were so many photographers around to which Hoggy replied: "They're taking photos of you, you knob!""
