Sir Chris Hoy may not have left the track cycling world championships in Holland over the weekend in stunning form after claiming two bronzes and a silver in the team sprint, individual sprint and keirin but do not be too alarmed.
The 35-year-old Scot is keeping his power dry just a little for London 2012 where his sole aim will be to win one gold medal over a batch of minor medals. In defeat he was a class act, making a point to the 5,000-strong crowd packed inside the Omnisport Velodrome in Apeldoorn to applaud his two conquerors, Britain's Jason Kenny in the individual sprint semi-final, and Australia's Shane Perkins in the keirin final.
Later I bumped into him and his wife, Sarah, having a drink in a busy Saturday night bar where he let his hair down just a little. It was good to see from the man who won three Olympic gold medals in Beijing over five extraordinarily intensive days of racing but don't be alarmed, we're talking a couple of beers only and a good chat with his friends and colleagues.
More importantly he says he will take a fortnight off and then it is the final push for London where then, and only then, we will see the real McHoy!
