I'm into my 5th day down under in Australia and, so far, it's not been great being an English sports fan. Since I have been here I've sat in the Subiaco Oval stands in Perth to watch an England rugby team somehow to contrive to lose a rugby test match against a Wallaby side so totally beaten up in the pack that they conceded two penalty tries and had a man sent to the sin bin. How on earth can you win a game of rugby with that big a disadvantage? Well, you can when England miss 30 tackles and kick the ball away aimlessly to the eager Australian running backs. Then, a few hours' later, I watched England take on the USA in the World Cup, surrounded by fellow British sports writers and a few bottles of beer and stared in disbelief when Robert Green somehow managed to let the innocuous ball squirm away from his hands and into the back of the net. As a result of the rugby and the football the Aussie pilot was quick to jump on English misfortune by cracking jokes about it on the flight over from Perth to Sydney on the tannoy, even though the England rugby team were on the plane! Still, it's one thing saying that when your countrey is in the sporting ascendancy (and he didn't mention either the Ashes or the world Twenty20 Cup). It's another thing when that same night your own football team is about to take on Germany. Result? 4-0 Germany. I'd like to be on that pilot's plane now!
