I was a little nervous watching Adrian Chiles make his ITV football debut the other night for the England v Mexico international at Wembley. Not nervous about Adrian, but nervous about his new home. You see, Des Lynam came to ITV amid great blares of trumpets and bunting but found his laid-back style and consummate presentation skills nullified by chat from pundits and commercial breaks, normally two at half-time, as well as before and after. I was worried that Adrian's irreverent style, his erms and his buts, and his rather more football fan/When Saturday Comes take on the game as opposed to the polished automaton that often reads off the autocue, would not necessarily be appreciated by ITV. Well, I'm delighted to say that all my fears were allayed. Adrian was, well, Adrian. He got lucky when he asked Ashley Cole to "give us a smile" and, seconds later, the full back did exactly that, and he even had his new friends, Andy Townsend and Gareth Southgate, chuckling. I'd still rather see Adrian without the adverts but it's a welcome breath of fresh air for ITV Sport. I'd like to add that 10 years' ago he was interviewing me on his Radio 5 Live Saturday morning show and could not have been more helpful in plugging my book at the time. When we bump into each other these days, which is rare, he remains charm personified. So, good on you, Adrian, and don't let them change you. I'm sure they won't.
