My New Best friend was the Chelsea Manager

Picture 24

My new best friend in sport is the Chelsea manager - that is the former Chelsea manager. No, make that the former, former Chelsea manager. Honestly, I'm losing count. I met Avram Grant in Beijing during the Olympics last august and what began as a brief conversation turned into a full-blown, two bottles of wine, two hour chat. Grant had just been sacked for having the temerity to finish second with Chelsea in the Premiership and the Champions League, thanks to that John Terry slip and missed penalty. Now he was at his first Games and taking in as many sports as possible. After our night Avram began texting me regularly at the Olympics and a couple of times since. The communication had waned recently but I'm delighted to report he got back in touch this morning to say hello. The only problem with all this - and I'm being a journalist here - is that it would have been much handier if all this was happening when he had been Chelsea manager, rather than now when he clearly has too much time on his hands. I fully expect to become good friends with David Beckham when he retires from football, Andy Murray five years after he wins Wimbledon, and Lewis Hamilton long after he has quit with four world titles under his belt. That's me. Five years behind my time!
