Will Snubbing Sportsvibe Save Ipswich?

Paul Jewell 1

Simon Clegg phoned me the other day in response to my suggestion that I should be the next manager of Ipswich Town FC.

Clegg and I go back a long way because he used to be the CEO of the BOA, which meant he and I crossed friendly paths for many years at and in between various Olympic Games.

SInce he was relinquished from his post at BOA hq he has become the Chief Executive of Ipswich and it was his sombre (and rather brave) duty to sack manager Roy Keane last Friday - rather him than me, by the way.

Anyway, I left him a message suggesting he snapped me up quickly as there would be other managerial posts in the offering soon, including Liverpool, probably Villa, West Ham and even maybe Chelsea. I also promised him that if he and I agreed terms my first signing would be the diminutuve (and I mean diminutive) Colin Moynihan as my new centre back to solve his team's defensive problems. Moynihan, of course, is the BOA Chairman, and the man who, in effect, sacked Clegg.

It took less than 12 hours for the call to be returned. Somewhat surprisingly Clegg thanked me for his interest but declined my offer. The next day Ipswich lost 7-0 at Chelsea in the cup. They are currently loitering just above the relegation zone in the Championship.

Now they have appointed Paul Jewell as their new manager. I hope, for Simon's sake, that snubbing me and going for Jewell proves to be correct. Only time will tell!
