If the Ryder Cup was played every month golf might just become the most popular sport in the world.
After yet another day of high drama at Celtic Manor Europe came through by the narrowest of margins and all 12 men in captain Colin Montgomerie's team played their part, but the heroes of today in the singles were undoubtedly the rabble-rousing Ian Poulter, the cool and efficient Luke Donald, the massive talent that is Rory McIlroy, the rioja-drinking, Cuban cigar-smoking Miguel Angel Jiminez and the G-Man, Graeme McDowell, who followed up winning the US Open by forcing Hunter Mahon to concede the 17th and, with it, the Ryder Cup.
Say what you like about the fashion-conscious, tweeting Poulter, but put him in a European shirt and he becomes an irresistible force. McIlroy, meanwhile, now understands just how much his "Ryder Cup is just an exhibition" comment from a year ago was wide of the mark. The young man is hooked and his half against Stewart Cink made all the difference. Jimenez is one of the great characters of world golf, as he showed once more by taking over the drinking and smoking Darren Clark mantle, while the putt that won the 16th for McDowell was probably the putt that won the Ryder Cup.
But a special word must be reserved for Monty. He is, without doubt, Mr Ryder Cup and didn't you just know that his captaincy would come through? I wouldn't attempt to get hold of any of the Europeans until late tomorrow at the earliest. Tonight will be messy. Very messy. And don't the European team deserve it!
