Say what you like about Ferrari and the "Team Orders" debacle at the German Grand Prix. I spent the day at Ferrari HQ in Maranello yesterday and everything they do - well virtually everything - oozes class. Sure, the blatant order over the radio to Felipe Massa to tell him to allow his teammate Fernando Alonso past at Hockenheim left a sour taste in the mouth, as well as a $100,000 fine from the sport's governing body, the FIA. And if the Spaniard goes on to become world champion for a third time - and his win at Monza on Sunday means he is right back in the hunt - then Hockenheim will be brought up again and again. But this has gone now, and perhaps Ferrari's biggest crime was not to do something that most if not all teams have been doing for a long time, but to make it so obvious. All I can say is that I met Mr Piero Ferrari yesterday, the second and only surviving son of Enzo Ferrari, for a half hour meeting and discovered a man full of charm, good manners and accommodation. Moreover we were interupted for a few seconds by Luca di Montezemolo, the Chairman of Ferrari and the man who organised the 1990 football World Cup in Italy. His net wealth is said to be around £400 million. When he arrived at Monza last Saturday he was surrounded by Italian TV camera crews. He is that famous in Italy. Yesterday, though, he twice apologised for breaking into our conversation, once at the beginning and again at the end. It is a small thing, but good manners and class are not things that can be bought. You either have it, or you don't. Personally I hope Ferrari continue to have a successful season. Just looking around the famous Maranello headquarters, from the workers in their overalls to the pretty receptionist, showed just how important winning at Monza meant to the Prancing Horse.
