Still on the subject of Formula One characters: David Coulthard donated a four figure sum towards two charities I climbed Kilimanjaro for before Christmas after I asked him to support me. He must be approached by hundreds and hundreds of people to make such donations on the presumption that he can afford it, and cannot possibly please everyone.
I had an advantage in that I have known DC for many years and we have always got on pretty well but, nonetheless, it was a typically generous gesture by a man who, in the false and fawning world of Formula One, has never, ever, been up himself. He is now preparing for a new career as a BBC TV analyst when the sport returns to the Beeb next month. This follows a highly successful career as a racing driver, a personal wealth amassed of many millions, a succession of beautiful former girlfriends, and now Karen, a stunningly attractive and clever partner and mother of their son, Dayton, a string of businesses, and now a top job at the BBC.
By rights we should all hate him, but the fact that he remains an all-round top bloke means he continues to escape the green-eyed monster of jealousy. Lucky bugger!
