Indestructible Stirling's Directing Operations from His Bed!

Stirling Moss

News from the home, or rather the bed, of Sir Stirling Moss, 82 in September, and still fighting fit despite being forced to his bed as he recovers from the kind of accident that would finish most off, but not the redoubtable, indestructible knight. Stirling, of course, is another of our national treasures, a man whose name policemen used long after he retired from motor sport when asking speeding drivers who they thought they were. The best driver never to have won a world title managed to survive a long and distinguished motor racing career relatively (relatively) unscathed, which is more than can be said for most of his colleagues on the grid. It came as no surprise to me then to discover, on calling him at home, that he is now well on the road to recovery after falling down a liftshaft in his own house, breaking both ankles in the process. Stirling is directing operations from his bed, where he has to stay for another week or two until he can walk again. "Can't remember the last time I've been so still," he said, in good spirits. The nation rejoices at the continuing life of Formula One's version of Austin Powers.
