I had the great pleasure of compering a question and answer session last night with two of the biggest legends in the history of motor sport, Sir Stirling Moss and John Surtees at a function in the Old Brompton Road celebrating the arrival of the exclusive, $250,000 Ferrari Opus Diamante edition.
Both were in excellent form as they sat either side of me to swap stories of their times as drivers, when there were no seat belts, the circuits had few meaningful barriers, and drivers lost their lives on a regular basis.
Surtees, of course, remains the only man to have won world titles on two and four wheels, while Moss, despite being one of the most respected racers of all time, is the best man never to have been crowned world champion. Would Stirling like to be driving today? "No chance," he replied. "Now it's all about seeing your sponsors afterwards. In my time it was all about seeing the birds!" Stirling Moss is 81!
