I was on a train last week doing some last minute sports research before appearing on Radio 5 Live when a man peered through the seats and asked if I was Andy Stafford, the sports author. I told him that my name was Ian, but I was probably the person he was thinking of. Over the course of the next 20 minutes he not only told me his own story - he lived in Dubai but was over in the UK for a couple of weeks - but also that he enjoyed my first participatory book, "Playgrounds of the Gods," so much that he had read it at least four times. To be honest it wasn't the best time to do this as I was about to talk with apparent expertise on national radio on some subjects I need still to gem up on, but when a person is that kind it seems somewhat rude not to engage. As we came to his station, five minutes before my stop, my new friend rose to his feet, slung his bag over his back, shook my hand, and departed with these final words. "Can't say I enjoyed your next book very much, though." Ouch!
