I spent a night in the company of Andy Green, the fastest man on earth last night. Green holds the world land speed record and is the first man to ever break the sound barrier on land when he set a new world mark of over 750 mph on the Utah salt flats. Like all speed freaks Andy is ever so slightly mad, in the nicest possible way. His latest plan is to make more history by reaching 1,000 mph in a car. This is not a typo. He plans to travel at 1,000 mph!! In his spare time he is the captain of the RAF's Cresta Run team (see feature in extreme section on the Cresta Run). I guess everyone has their own interpretation of insanity. A few years ago I went to watch Shaun Baker, the world's best extreme kayaker, hurl himself and his kayak down a 80 foot waterfall, avoiding boulders at great speed, and risking his life in the process. Afterwards he asked me what I'd been up to recently. When I told him I'd just completed the Cresta Run he responded: "You're f***ing mad!" One man's madness is another man's thrill.
