Being a lumberjack may be a slightly tenuous link to sport but, hey, so what? Last night I sat in the Albert Hall just a few seats away from Michael Palin who removed his Roman toga (after re-enacting his "Fwee Woderick" sketch from "Life of Brian") to reveal his red and black checked lumberjack shirt. Cue one of the most famous and absurd songs in history, with a chorus supplied by the likes of Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. And cue one of the most ridiculous sing-songs I've ever witnessed. In the venue of the Last Night of the Proms, where the British nation belts out "Land of Hope and Glory," a packed house spent five minutes singing about being a lumberjack, eating scones for tea, wearing bras and suspenders, and wishing we'd all been girlies - just like our dear papas! Absolutely priceless!
