The Sports Industry Awards - One of the best nights in the sporting calendar

sports industry awards

Excellent night once again at the annual Sports Industry Awards held at the Battersea Evolution where a staggering 1,700 people from the world of sport and sport business came together to mingle, air kiss and watch a series of gongs being handed out by host Martin Bayfield and a galaxy of sports stars, including Alan Shearer, Petr Cech, Jackie Stewart (in his usual tartan trousers), Joe Calzaghe, Amir Khan, Kelly Holmes, Ricky Hatton, Gordon Greenidge, Colin Croft, Clive Woodward, Michael Vaughan and many more.

Bayfs gave me one of my biggest laughs at this same event last year when Jenson Button came on as a winner, looked at Martin and said: "Wow, you're big," to which Bayfs replied: "Yes, and tall."

Last night there were more fun and games when massive basketball star John Amaechi joint presented an award with Kelly Holmes, dwarfing the Dame in the process. Now, I happen to know the event organisers extremely well which means I was present at the very first Sports Industry Awards ten years ago.

It was a very decent first stab, as I recall, but in the space of a decade it has become the must go to awards event in the British sporting calendar. So take a bow Nick Keller, in particular, and the rest of his crew such as Tom Caplan, because their drive and chutzpah have made the Awards a truly remarkable occasion.
