Sad to hear that Josh Lewsey "failed" in his attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest but happy that he descended safely after equipment failure left him lacking oxygen which created an extremely dangerous environment for the former Wasps and England rugby star. I use inverted commas surrounding "failed" because, although he'll probably see it as a failure, I most certainly don't. Josh just got unlucky, that's all, and if he "failed" then so, too, did some of the most accomplished mountaineers in the world in the past two decades such as Rob Hall, Scott Fischer, Joe Tasker and Pete Boardman, let alone the great George Mallory in 1924, all of whom still lie somewhere on the slopes of the world's tallest mountain. To reach the summit of Everest you need luck, the Gods and the climate to be on your side and although luck failed Josh, the Gods at least ensured that he came down in one piece and alive and I hope he realises this. If you see Sportsvibe's film of Josh training in the Brecon Beacons you will see how determined he was to conquer Everest. Well, the guy's a bloody hero in any case because not only did he take on a challenge which has killed so many people, but he also raised much needed money and profile for the Help for Heroes campaign, and for this we should all salute the former army officer!
