FOOTBALL MUSEUM MOVES TO MANCHESTER

The National Football Museum will move to its new home at Urbis in Manchester, it has been confirmed. A meeting of trustees affirmed, unopposed, the resolution made last year, which will see the new site open in the summer of 2011.

It was also cited that the current museum in Preston might be kept as it is, with the collection of football memorabilia still accessible to the general public.

Chairman of the trustees, Paul Dermondy, said: “We are working relentlessly to maximise public access to our world class collection and the National Football Museum will open up our exhibits to a much wider audience. This could be further enhanced by the retention of public access to the collection in Preston.”

INLINE SKATER PLANS WORLD RECORD JUMP ATTEMPT

Skating legend Taïg Khris will attempt to smash the world record for the longest roller jump at Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower on Saturday 29th May.

34-year-old Khris, a world champion inline skater will drop 40m on a ramp from the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, landing on a 25m high quarter pipe. He is expected to reach speeds of up to 100km/h. The Extreme Sports Channel will be the first TV channel to broadcast an hour-long documentary recording Khris backstage as he tackles this astonishing world record attempt.

The documentary of his Eiffel Tower jump will take Khris global as it premieres next month to over 25 million homes in 65 countries around the world where Extreme is available.

In addition, Extreme last week announced a new offbeat travel series planned with the inline legend, due to air globally this autumn as part of the channel’s recently expanded remit to air more factual entertainment programming. The tentatively titled Taig Khris: Extreme Adventure will follow Khris as he travels the world in order to meet little-known communities and try out some of their traditional action sports.

LAUNCH OF JAGUAR ACADEMY OF SPORT

KIDS GO FREE AT RUGBY SEVENS

Children will be able to enjoy try-filled rugby from top rugby stars at the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 14th August.

The new "Kids Go Free" initiative is part of the drive to introduce a younger and more diverse audience to rugby at Twickenham giving them a fun and affordable day out during the summer holidays.

The Middlesex Sevens tournament is an exciting knock-out tournament of 16 top rugby teams including England, Scotland, Wales, Guinness Premiership clubs and invitation sides plus exhibition matches. Many of the players on the pitch will have an eye on the chance of a place in GB's future Olympic Sevens team.

PARALYMPIC HOPEFULS SLIDE A MILE

The National Volleyball Centre in Kettering will be hosting one of the more unusual Sport Relief Mile attempts this year when the GB Sitting Volleyball team takes on the “Slide a Mile” challenge.

A Sitting Volleyball court measures 10m x 6m, meaning that the players involved will have to cover over 160 court lengths, going under the net each time. Players will be attempting the challenge in groups of six, with at least four groups achieving the full mile.

As well as a fundraising target of £2000 for the worthy Sport Relief cause, the “Slide a Mile” challenge is an opportunity to draw attention to the growing sport of Sitting Volleyball with the view to attract new players.

Sitting Volleyball is another version of Volleyball that has been adapted to allow anyone to participate, including those with a disability, and has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1980. London 2012 is set to be the first Paralympic Games that Great Britain will put forward both men’s and women’s Sitting Volleyball squads.

DAVYDENKO JOINS DUNLOP

Dunlop has announced their new partnership with Russian tennis ace, Nikolay Davydenko for rackets, clothing and accessories. The partnership will also see Davydenko endorse Dunlop’s junior talent identification programme – D-Squad.

CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL PREDICTIONS

Tomorrow marks that start of one of racing’s greatest occasions, The Cheltenham festival. This four-day event will welcome more than 200,000 spectators with millions of pounds being bet on the outcome of the 26 races.

The culmination of the festival is the much anticipated Gold Cup, which takes place on Friday and sees two of the highest rated jump horses, Kauto Star and Denman go head to head. Kauto Star is bidding to win the race for the third time while Denman will be hoping for his second victory.

With both horses trained by Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls, opinion has been divided on who will come out on top in this sporting spectacle. Here are the thoughts of some of our country’s most famous sports stars as to who will win the prestigious Gold Cup.

WHO WILL RULE THE POOL?

Aqua Sphere is daring all swimmers to compete in a brand new men vs. women Swim Challenge. Pitching men against women to raise funds and awareness for breast and prostate cancer, the Swim Challenge is set to become the ultimate yardstick for who rules the pool in 2010.

From April 1 until November 30th, swimmers of all abilities are invited to sign on to www.swimchallenge.org each day to log their hours (not their laps) in the water. Whether they like it smooth or rough, on their backs or their stomachs – who will outlast the competition in terms of time spent in the water.

The Swim Challenge website will track the total times via a “leader meter” posted on the website. The site will also allow swimmers to individually track their personal progress in the pool, encouraging them to swim longer each day.

At the end of the Challenge, Aqua Sphere will divide a 25,000 EURO donation between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The amount allocated to each will be determined by the cumulative hours swum by each gender.

BOBBY MOORE FUND HOSTS CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

BRITISH FREESTYLER FLIES THE FLAG IN SOUTH AFRICA

Cornish teenager, Andrew Henderson will be flying the flag in South Africa as he bids to become the Worlds number one freestyle footballer. Taking part in Cape Town, the Top 60 freestyle footballers will battle it out from the 26 to 28 April 2010 in the World Final of Red Bull Street Style, which will be judged by football legends, Edgar Davids and George Weah.

After 221 national qualifying tournaments featuring over 5000 competitors, the best freestyle footballers from 60 countries across the globe have managed to qualify. Now, the best of the best will be focussing on making it to the Last 16 in order to be able to showcase their skills in front of the Castle of Good Hope on Cape Town’s Grand Parade on Wednesday.

Commonwealth Games England have announced that they will let the nation decide which anthem is to be played at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi by allowing the public to vote for the song of their choice.

Voters can choose between God Save The Queen, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory - with the winner becoming the official anthem of the England Team to be played on the podium in Delhi when a Gold medal is won as well as at the Welcoming Ceremony when the St. George’s flag is raised.

FABIO CAPELLO LAUNCHES FANS FOOTBALL INDEX

Fabio Capello has officially launched his own football index. Developed for football fans around the world by the manager of the England football team in conjunction with a team of technical and digital media experts, the Capello Index establishes a new formula for objectively measuring a player’s performance. The Capello Index will create an international player ranking system as well as providing the scoring mechanism for a new fantasy football game, the Capello XI.

The Capello Index has been two years in development and uses a scoring system which takes account of every key event that occurs during the course of a match. The score a player’s action generates is weighted depending on a number of factors, such as the area of the pitch in which they are completed, their impact on the match and the importance of game.

Fabio Capello, England manager and co-founder of the Capello Index, said: “Everyone who follows football enjoys debating the merits of particular players. I have sought to use my experience as a manager at both club and international level to identify the attributes and qualities that make players valuable to a team. Working in conjunction with Chicco Merighi, we have created a formula to objectively assess player performance beyond measurements simply based on gut instinct or raw statistical data.”

The Capello Index will measure and evaluate the performances of players in the five leading European leagues and across the major football competitions, including the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. The first tournament to be covered by the Capello Index will be the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ which starts next month in South Africa.

The World Cup will also see the launch of a new fantasy football game showcasing the Capello Index. The ‘Capello XI’ represents a new era for fantasy football. Not only will the players be measured by the most comprehensive scoring system of any fantasy game, the Capello XI is the most interactive game yet as fans will be able to follow the performance of their players in real time. LORD NELSON BACKS THE BID

As the England 2018 Bid Book departs for the FIFA headquarters in Zurich and the hopes of an entire football mad nation go with it; one of England’s most iconic figures has lent his support to the campaign to bring the World Cup to these shores in eight years time.

Lord Horatio Nelson, admiral of the fleet, victor of the Battle of Trafalgar and English hero became England 2018’s most eminent supporter, posing in an official Back the Bid football scarf as dawn broke across London.

DALEY THOMPSON TO COACH LAUREUS TRIATHLETES

Britain’s most successful multi-sport athlete, Daley Thompson has signed up to act as team coach for the 25 fundraisers racing for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series event in Hyde Park, London, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July.

With Olympic distance places sold out and the Sprint distance field nearing capacity, demand for starting spots is high for the race which uniquely offers participants the chance to race over the London 2012 Olympic Games triathlon course. Having recently become the Global Charity Partner of the International Triathlon Union, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is able to offer 25 places to fundraisers.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation will be calling on its celebrated sports stars to ensure that racing for the Laureus team is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the 25 triathletes, whether ‘newbies’ or seasoned campaigners.

Double Olympic decathlon gold medallist and founding member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, Thompson enjoys watching triathlon and is looking forward to fulfilling his duties as team coach. He said: “I’m looking forward to helping the guys along as best I can, but I hope they’re not expecting any short-cuts. There are no magic exercises which I can give them to replace hard work - like everything in life, they will get out what they put in. That said, we’ll try to have some fun along the way!

“I have followed triathlon with interest over the past few years and really enjoyed watching the competitions in Melbourne at the Commonwealth Games and at the Beijing Olympics,” continued Thompson. “We’re two years away from the London Games and we stand a good chance to be amongst the medals in triathlon. We’ve got the current men’s world champion Alistair Brownlee and good strength in depth across both men and women. I’m really looking forward to the event in Hyde Park, and working with the Laureus team.”

As well as scripting training tips for the Laureus team’s race preparation, Thompson will be hosting a training day in Battersea in June for all team members and will be there on the race day itself for a pre-race briefing and to cheer along his charges.

For the Hyde Park race, each member of the Laureus team will be asked to raise a minimum of £500. Local project beneficiaries will include the London Active Communities Project in Lambeth, which is committed to the use and promotion of sports, arts and cultural activities in order to improve youth citizenship, social inclusion and community cohesion.

THOMAS PREPARES FOR CHARITY BIKE RIDE

Ex-England and Crystal Palace footballer Geoff Thomas, is teaming up with a fellow cancer survivor in The London-Paris 2010.

Thomas, who beat leukaemia, will ride with businessman and leukaemia survivor, Graham Hampson Silk. The men met when Thomas counselled Hampson Silk as he fought for his life. They now campaign for improved treatment for leukaemia patients.

Thomas, who beat his cancer with a stem cell transplant from his sister in 2004, said: “Graham and I were both treated by Professor Charlie Craddock in Birmingham.   I was a bit further down the road when Charlie asked if I could talk Graham through my experience.

“We met in the waiting room at the hospital and Graham and I shared the toughest battle of our lives – our fight against cancer. That experience cemented our friendship and determination to campaign for better treatment for leukaemia patients.”

Hampson Silk was not suitable for transplant therapy and his life was saved by a new drug. He explained: “I was given three years to live which was absolutely devastating.   My brother was not a close enough match for me to have a transplant and I thought I was going to die.”

In 1980, Hampson Silk’s father, Tom, a legendary chairman of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, and his mother, Ruth, were killed in an air crash in France returning from Hampson Silk’s 21st birthday party.   He said: “I knew the heartbreak of losing my parents and when I was diagnosed with leukaemia I had three very young children.   The thought of leaving them was unbearable.”

Hampson Silk was then given a chance of life: “I was told that I couldn’t have a transplant and that my only hope was a new experimental drug called Glivec. I was able to get onto a trial of that drug and it saved my life.”

His experience led him to join the Geoff Thomas Foundation as chairman: “Geoff and I have become great friends and we have shared some astonishing times.   We are now determined to campaign for more drugs trials for leukaemia patients. This country spends hundreds of millions of pounds on research and if we could get the new drugs to patients quickly, more people would have the same chance of survival that I had.

“We need to raise £10 million to fund a network of blood cancer trials centres that will make a real difference to thousands of people with blood cancer.”

Thomas added: “It’ll be a tough road to Paris but Graham and I are made of strong stuff. We know that every mile ridden by Team GTF will be helping leukaemia patients who face the same hard road that we have travelled ourselves.”

Thomas and Hampson Silk will be part of a 15-strong Geoff Thomas Foundation team to ride The L2P which also includes Sky commentator and ex-Crystal Palace footballer, John Salako.

With the Premier League now concluded, Manchester United superstar and UNICEF Ambassador Ryan Giggs will be preparing for his next showdown at Old Trafford, as part of the Soccer Aid 2010 Rest of the World team.

Giggs, unveiled as the latest football superstar to sign up for Soccer Aid, will create a moment of footballing history when he pulls on the same Rest of the World jersey as French footballing icon Zinedine Zidane at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. Both players last met at Old Trafford in a Manchester United verses Real Madrid Champions League tie in 2003.

Forming a legendary midfield, Giggs, the most decorated player in English football history, and Zidane will be attempting to defeat the Soccer Aid England team, whose line up includes UNICEF Ambassador and Soccer Aid founder Robbie Williams.

Ryan Giggs, a UNICEF Ambassador since 2006, has signed up to the game to help raise as much money as possible for the charity, which is the world’s leading children’s organisation.

Ryan Giggs and Zinedine Zidane will be joined by team mates including former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, Heroes actor James Kyson-Lee, Chef Gordon Ramsay, Westlife members Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne, cricketing legend Brian Lara, football star Henrik Larsson, Boyzone member Ronan Keating, TV presenter Gethin Jones, undefeated boxing champion Joe Calzaghe and many more.

They will be captained by Michael Sheen and managed by Liverpoollegend Kenny Dalglish, with the help of his old Reds team mate Ian Rush.

They will be taking on the England team who’s team sheet currently includes Robbie Williams, GMTV presenter Ben Shephard, actor and TV presenter Bradley Walsh, presenter and DJ Jamie Theakston, boxing hero Ricky Hatton, actor Damian Lewis alongside footballing heroes Alan Shearer, David Seaman, Teddy Sheringham and Jamie Redknapp. Comic genius James Corden will be the assistant manager.

Middlesex County Cricket Club have announced the launch of a spectacular competition at Lord’s which allows spectators at each of the five home Friends Provident t20 Middlesex Panthers matches in June the opportunity to win one million Australian dollars – more than £600,000 in cash!

To celebrate the arrival of Middlesex’s two Australian overseas stars, Adam Gilchrist and David Warner, for this year’s Friends Provident t20 competition, Middlesex are running this unique competition during the half time interval at each of the Panthers matches at Lord’s – the Ignis million dollar challenge.

Middlesex and England’s ICC World t20 winner Eoin Morgan, fresh back from his tournament win in the Caribbean, was at Lord’s today, along with Middlesex MD of Cricket Angus Fraser and Middlesex Captain Shaun Udal, to officially launch the competition and have a go at the Ignis Million Dollar Challenge themselves.

Spectators at Panther FP t20 matches will be encouraged to send an SMS text message to a number which will be promoted at each of the games, in the t20 Event Guide and on the big screens at Lord’s, inviting them to have a crack at winning the million. A percentage of the proceeds gained from all of the SMS messages will be donated to Middlesex’s long term charity partner, Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

During the first half of the game, three lucky spectators who have texted in, will be picked at random from all entries and will be invited out onto the hallowed Lord’s outfield during the interval to have their once-in-a-lifetime chance in front of the famous Lord’s Pavilion!

The competition is simple.

Each entrant gets to face two deliveries from a bowling machine, at a very generous and more than hittable pace of just 55mph. They are required to hit the two balls towards a target, sited 45 yards away – with the nearest from each of the three competitors winning the chance to face the golden ball and hit for the million.

The ‘million dollar golden ball’ is the one that really counts! The nearest competitor then retakes their guard and faces the million dollar delivery - same speed, same line and same length - no harder than that. Put simply – if they hit the ball through the target with the golden ball; they win a share of one million Australian dollars.

The competition is being run at each of the five Lord’s matches, with a total of one million dollars up for grabs. If more than one competitor hits the target, then the million dollars will be divided equally between all winners.

MIKE GATTING ANNOUNCES MARATHON CRICKET MATCH

England cricket legend Mike Gatting appeared at Lord’s to throw down the gauntlet to British cricketers to join him in breaking the British record for the longest continuous cricket match.

The challenge is to celebrate 60 years of charitable activity by The Lord’s Taverners - a cricket based charity working to help children gain access to sport, especially those with disabilities or who are from a disadvantaged background.

To accept the challenge on behalf of amateur cricketers everywhere was Richard Kirtley, Record Breaking leader of last year’s successful expedition to play cricket on Mount Everest.

Starting on Saturday July 17th at 8am, the cricketers will play day and night until 8pm the following Monday (19th July). The match will be taking place in the picturesque grounds of Wellington College in Berkshire. A festival atmosphere is expected with food-stalls, beer tents and children’s entertainment. Spectators are welcome at what will be a unique cricketing celebration in idyllic surroundings.

The project aims to raise £25,000 for the Lord’s Taverners, whilst providing a fitting celebration of their 60th anniversary.

Over the course of the weekend, players will be joined on the pitch by Mike Gatting, Chris Tarrant and representatives of the Surrey Cricket Club.

With the help of floodlights, the match will run continuously for a full 60 hours. There will be breaks for refreshments, but only in accordance with ECB Test Match rules. The format of the game will be 40 overs on, 40 overs off. Each team will have more than the 11 required to play a full format game. This will enable players to get a little food and rest when required.

Both sides are recruiting players able to take on such a challenge. In order to be a part of this record attempt, all that is required is a commitment to raise £500 for the Lord’s Taverners. In return you will receive your place on a team, a branded playing shirt, accommodation for those rare moments of rest, food and refreshments, as well as being part of something truly special.

Ex-Middlesex Captain and England great Mike Gatting said: ‘I want to lay down a challenge to cricketers all over Britain. Come and test your mettle with 60 hours of continuous cricket. I believe this is a physical challenge on par with running a marathon, and will be an achievement of which we can all be truly proud. Sportsvibe where invited last week to the Bobby Moore Fund Celebrity Sports Quiz launch at the Brewery in London. Hosted by ITV’s number one football commentator, Clive Tyldesley, the quiz tested the knowledge of some of the countries top pundits and journalists.

Among the attendees were Sky Sports’ Ian Darke, Soccer AM’s Max Rushden, Spurs and England legend Alan Mullery and Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrisey. Lining up alongside these television stars were Sportsvibe’s very own Adrian Back and Simon Knights.

After an evening of entertainment and lively discussions on England’s chances at the World Cup the winner of the quiz was announced. Sportsvibe came out on top with Adrian Back claiming a hard fought victory.

Commonwealth Games England have announced that Jerusalem has been chosen as the anthem to be played for English athletes competing at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The decision follows a month-long public vote, which saw 52% choose their song of their choice, with Jerusalem coming out as a runaway favourite.

Voters were able to choose between God Save The Queen, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory - with Jerusalem beating the both the national anthem and the anthem previously used for English athletes competing at Commonwealth Games. The new official anthem of the England Team will be played for English athletes on the podium in Delhi when a Gold medal is won.

England athlete Dean Macey, who won Gold at the 2006 Games in Melbourne, welcomed the new anthem, saying: “Jerusalem’s awesome for getting you pumped before competing. Couple this with the huge pride that comes in wearing the red lion and you’ve got the perfect anthem for England’s Commonwealth Games’.

World silver medallist, Lisa Dobriskey welcomed the new anthem, saying: “Jerusalem is a wonderful choice for England’s Commonwealth Games anthem and one that will have the full backing of the athletes in Delhi. It is a very powerful piece of music that is capable of evoking deep feelings of pride and patriotism and we hope it will be associated with the sound of success this summer.”

BT CUSTOMERS SCORE WITH HUGE SAVINGS ON SKY SPORTS 1 AND 2

BT heralded a new era of competition in pay-TV by launching the UK’s best value deal for Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 for just £16.99 a month.
BT Vision customers can add the channels for the simple monthly price on a month-by-month contract. If they only want to add either one of Sky Sports 1 or Sky Sports 2 they can do so for only £11.99.

Customers who are happy to commit to a bundle of broadband and calls for 24 months, can get an even better deal with the BT ‘total sports package’, starting at just £6.99 for Sky Sports 1, ESPN and ‘on demand’ sport from BT Vision or £11.99 for Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, ESPN and ‘on demand’ sport. The latter bundle works out £205 cheaper than Sky’s current equivalent deal and £281 cheaper than Virgin Media over a year.

BT will be able to sign up customers for these packages from today, in plenty of time for the customer to enjoy the new Premier League football season, which starts on August 14.

Research by BT indicated that around 4m more people in the UK would like to sign up for Sky Sports channels, but felt that it was too expensive.

Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT Retail, said: “We expect that entry prices as low as £6.99 will welcome in a huge number of extra customers who’d love to enjoy these channels, but thought they were too expensive.

“A more competitive market will ensure that customers continue to get the best sport for the sharpest prices and this opening of the market will be in the best interests of customers.”

The start of a new more competitive market was sparked by a ruling from Ofcom, which obliged Sky to wholesale Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 at regulated prices to rivals such as BT.

Football presenter Jeff Stelling is urging fans of the beautiful game to take up a new World Cup challenge – and score with their number skills.

The Soccer Saturday and Countdown front man has teamed up with learndirect to launch Football Fever 2010, an online game putting men’s maths ability to the test.

The Facebook application can be shared between friends, with players competing against each other in a bid to win virtual World Cup glory. Points are earned by answering a series of World Cup-related maths questions against the clock and taking shots at goal.

Jeff Stelling says, “learndirect’s Football Fever 2010 is a fantastic way to show off your football knowledge, while identifying any maths skills gaps you might have. SWISS STAR GIVES HIS VIEWS ON CRUNCH TIE WITH HONDURAS

Switzerland caused one of the biggest shocks of this years World Cup when in their first group game they beat European Champions Spain.

Thanks in large to a fantastic defense and the efforts of Diego Benaglio in goal, the Swiss fully deserved their 1-0 victory which came courtesy of Gelson Fernandes.

Unfortunately Switzerland could not maintain their fantastic start as they were beaten 1-0 by Chile. They did however set a new World Cup record when after 67 minutes the match remained scoreless.

This meant that the Swiss has not conceded a goal in 551 minutes of World Cup football. Sportsvibe got the views of keeper Diego Benaglio ahead of the all important game against Honduras.

Diego, how dissaponting was the defeat to Chile?

Every defeat is sheer frustration for me. I cannot stand losing. We must admit, though, that Chile where able to create more dangerous situations around the penalty area than we were.

Does the new world record that the team has set mean anything to you as a goalkeeper?

Well, it is one more historical thing for the statistics, but if you take part in a FIFA World Cup you are not that interested in records. It is the points we gain at this current World Cup that counts. It is the points against Spain and hopefully Honduras that take us into the second stage of this World Cup in South Africa, it is not the statistical records.

Having said that, do you think Switzerland can change now from the underdogs to favourites to qualify?

I am sure we can. Against Spain and Chile we had to focus on our defensive play. But we proved in the final minutes against Chile that we can create scoring opportunities. And we were down to ten players against one of the best offensive teams at this FIFA World Cup.

Valon Behrami will miss the crucial game against Honduras which you must win by 2 goals. Who is going to make the difference in this game?

I can give a lot of names out of our squad. That is one of our qualities. We do not depend on any particular players, we are a good, well balanced team that sure knows how to score.

RACING’S IN THE PINK

It might seem like a commentator’s nightmare but, at Chester races on Friday 9th July 2010, every lady rider in the Breast Cancer Care Pink Mile will be dressed in specially designed pink racing silks.

The horserace, which is being organised to raise funds for charity, will continue the ‘pink lady’ theme with pink number cloths on the horses, all of whom will be fillies. There will also be a pink winning post erected at the finishing line, especially for the occasion, and racegoers are also encouraged to wear pink on the night.

This first ever pink horserace is being hosted by Chester Racecourse and Racing for Change, the body set up to broaden the appeal of the sport, with the aim of raising £25,000, so that Breast Cancer Care can continue supporting people affected by breast cancer.

There will be a number of fund raising initiatives and Racing UK, the UK’s leading racing channel, have agreed to donate £5 of every subscription on that day to Breast Cancer Care. They will also be screening the race free-to-air, so anyone with Sky TV can watch it, while some of the country’s top bookmakers have also committed to donating a percentage of their profits on the race.

In the race itself, some of the country’s top professional female jockeys will be competing against several of the best amateur lady riders for the honour of victory. The winning connections can expect to collect their trophy from Louise Owen, wife of footballer Michael, who is a keen racing fan and local racehorse owner.

The Racecourse will also be hosting other celebrities on the night as many of the stars from the hit Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks, will be in attendance as the programme is also sponsoring a race during the evening.

Olympic Gold Medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Jonathan Edwards joined schoolchildren at Eltham Green Specialist Sports College to celebrate this year’s Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week.

With seven out of ten schoolchildren in the capital already inspired by London 2012 to take part in more sport, Sir Chris Hoy and Jonathan Edwards today visited Eltham Green Specialist Sports College with 350 pupils from schools across South East London. The schoolchildren took part in a Festival of Sport themed event and tried their hand at a range of Olympic and Paralymic sports, including tennis, handball and badminton, along with the Olympic Gold Medallists.

Gatorade is launching an integrated campaign with AMV BBDO to supporting its current sports rewards promotion. The campaign targets sports-drinks users via online video, print, outdoor, in-gym media, and digital display and urges UK consumers to ‘look after their bottle’.

Featuring Victoria Pendleton, the recently signed leading GB female sprint cyclist, the campaign carries a cycling prominence and aims to create further awareness and interaction with the 2010 on-pack points promotion; set to run until the end of the year. One of St Andrews’ oldest golf shops, Auchterlonies, which is located just a lob wedge from the Old Course’s 18th green, will be hosting two stars of the modern game next week, when former Open Champion Justin Leonard and world number 9 golfer, Paul Casey, pop into the legendary high street golf retailers on Monday, July 12.

Casey and Leonard, both of whom are part of Nike’s Golf stable of stars in the field for the 150th anniversary of the Open Championship, which tees off on July 15, will be at the iconic shop at 5.30pm to take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of a new in-store Nike Golf installation.

GATORADE TO FUEL BRITISH CYCLING

Gatorade has confirmed that it has made a serious commitment to cycling in Britain through three partnerships that will see the PepsiCo brand at the forefront of the nation’s cycling until December 2013.

The deal aligns Gatorade with professional road cycling team, Team Sky, British Cycling and the Great Britain Cycling Team. Gatorade will also be fuelling Sky Ride, a mass participation event run by Sky and British Cycling, which aims to get one million more people cycling regularly each month.

Gatorade becomes the Official Sports Drink across the three initiatives at a time when the country has seen considerable success in the sport and cycling participation is increasing as a leisure and alternative transport activity. The sports drink will provide scientific support from their team at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) to British Cycling, both at the grassroots and through to its podium programme whilst also directly supporting Team Sky. In addition, Gatorade will be hydrating the many hundreds of thousands of riders across the UK in one of the biggest mass participation sport programmes in the UK – Sky Ride 2010.

Team Sky has already enjoyed success this year with wins in major races in Australia, France, Oman, Qatar, Belgium, Holland and Italy. The team are now competing in their first Tour de France.

After the success of Sky Ride 2009, Sky Ride 2010 has added a further seven locations to the event programme, taking this year’s tally to 12 mass participation bike rides across ten UK cities starting in Ealing, in west London on 18 July and then moving to major towns and cities across the UK: Bath and Southampton (25 July), Manchester (1 August), Middlesbrough and the London Borough of Redbridge both (15 August), Glasgow (22 August), Leicester (29 August), Bradford (29 August), Blackpool (31 August), Mayor of London's Sky Ride in central London (5 September) and Birmingham (12 September).

Last year over 110,000 wheels hit the streets at the free, family-oriented events. WEYMOUTH SAILING ACADEMY MARKS 2 YEARS TO THE GAMES

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) will have nearly 500 young sailors competing at the Volvo Musto Optimist British National and Open Championship on July 25 to mark the 2 years to the 2012 Games starting. The youth regatta, feeder to all Olympic classes, runs 24 -30 July and is the UK’s largest Optimist event attracting international sailors to this unique venue. The Nationals will welcome sailors from across Europe, Asia and even Oceania to the 2012 sailing venue for what promises to be the biggest and best National Championships yet and who will all be part of the national, London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) celebrations taking place on July 25.

Tying in with the Optimist event this weekend is the LOCOG Open Weekend, an annual UK-wide celebration on 25 July to celebrate two years to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games. It will include hundreds of events across the UK with a key event being held at the WPNSA. This year has a fresh theme of ‘Challenge Yourself’ and fitting with this the Academy is setting a public challenge to predict if 300 youth Optimist sailors can tack on the whistle at the same time. A unique challenge that that has never ever been attempted before!

To add to the ‘2 years to go’ excitement at the Academy, Olympians Sarah Ayton and Saskia Clark will be on hand to help the young sailors get inspired to become future racing stars, taking time out of their busy campaigns to pass on their wisdom to young hopefuls.

Triple Olympic champion Ben Ainslie began his journey to the top of the sport in an Optimist and he will also be taking time out of his busy schedule to make an appearance during this special week. With many of Britain’s best sailors having started their career in an Optimist, this unique week promises to witness the new breed of British talent coming through from the grassroots.

JAGUAR ACADEMY OF SPORT ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL BURSARY AWARDS

At a Ceremony today in London the Jaguar Academy of Sport presented 35 young athletes, representing the next generation of British sporting talent, with the Jaguar Academy of Sport Bursary Awards. The Bursary Fund is at the core of the Jaguar Academy of Sport, which aims to recognise, celebrate and inspire the best of British sporting talent and success. The 35 athletes were chosen after a rigourous selection process conducted by SportsAid, which administers the Bursary Fund on behalf of the Jaguar Academy, with the final decision being made by the Patrons and Ambassadors of the Jaguar Academy of Sport, some of the nation’s most successful sportsmen and women.

The 35 successful young athletes are aged between 14 and 24 and have been drawn from all over the country, representing 19 English counties, Scotland and Wales. They represent a total of 30 sporting disciplines all of which are Olympic and Paralympic sports.

The Jaguar Academy of Sport has been established with the intention of not just providing funding to the next generation, but also nurturing and inspiring them. As such the best performing of the 35 young athletes will be topped-up with extra funding and will be presented with a prestigious Award by the Patrons at the Jaguar Academy of Sports Awards in November. There will also be opportunities during the year for the young athletes to be mentored by the Patrons and Ambassadors.

The young athletes were presented with their cheques and certificates by John Johnson, Operations Director Jaguar UK, Tim Lawler Chief Executive of SportsAid and, representing the Patrons of the Jaguar Academy of Sport, by Gareth Edwards (CBE). The Ambassadors of the Jaguar Academy of Sport were represented by Colin Jackson (CBE), Jamie Baulch, David Roberts (CBE), Tasha Danvers and Martin Brundle. NatWest CricketForce, the biggest volunteering initiative in UK sport with over 85,000 volunteers, aims to raise thousands of pounds for grassroots cricket clubs during the August Bank Holiday weekend. Marking the launch of the first ever NatWest CricketForce Fundraiser, former England Captain Michael Vaughan is encouraging clubs to celebrate the Bank Holiday by creating fundraising events, to assist ongoing club refurbishment and funds for new equipment.

Supporting the inaugural NatWest CricketForce Fundraiser weekend Michael Vaughan has signed and donated 100 cricket bats, which are up for grabs for the first 100 clubs to register their event. The signed bats can be used by clubs to auction as part of their fundraising day, which could include anything from a Twenty20 match and coaching sessions to BBQs, cricket quizzes, kids face painting and cake stalls.

DALLAGLIO EMBARKS ON EPIC CHARITY CYCLE

Lawrence Dallaglio is embarking upon a 2,800km cycle through all of the RBS 6 Nations countries in a bid to raise over £1million for charity. The Dallaglio Cycle Slam, which commenced in Rome on 12th February, is taking place over the course of a month and will take in all of the international rugby stadia along the way, finishing in Edinburgh.

The proceeds from the gruelling trip will be split equally between Sport Relief and the Dallaglio Foundation, which the former England Rugby star founded and whose beneficiaries include Cancer Research, DebRA, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Help for Heroes and the RPA Benevolent Fund.

Dallaglio said: “I’ve been training for this for a long time and it is a relief to finally get started. Since I hung up my international boots, I have had to watch the 6 nations wishing I was still on the pitch. This is my own new way of taking on Europe and I’m sure it will hurt just as much.”

Over two hundred and fifty other cyclists will join Dallaglio en route, including former footballers Lee Dixon and Les Ferdinand, who will both take part in the first leg, riding from Rome to San Remo. Former QPR, Newcastle and Tottenham legend Ferdinand said: “I commend everyone who is taking part and I hope people will support us as the money we raise can really make a difference.”

The route is split into five stages, each of which passing through an RBS 6 Nations country. From Rome and the Stadio Flaminio, the group will cycle through France to the Stade de France and then across the Channel to the home of English Rugby at Twickenham. They will then visit the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and Dublin’s Croke Park before heading to Murrayfield in time to watch England and Scotland battle over the Calcutta cup on 13th March.

This challenge is the latest in a long line of projects the Dallaglio Foundation has been working towards in its inaugural year. Launched after the passing of Lawrence’s mother Eileen, who lost her battle with cancer, the Dallaglio Foundation has already raised over £600,000 for Cancer Research UK.

'ARENA GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT' ANNOUNCED AT SILVERSTONE

A new Arena Circuit will be used to stage the 2010 Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The majority of the iconic track will still be in use; the only significant change is a new ‘Arena complex’, which has been designed to give three new opportunities for overtaking. This should enhance the action of an event that has always been criticised for the lack of opportunities for the drivers to pass one another.

Work on the Arena Grand Prix Circuit is said to be well under way, alongside improvements for spectator viewing facilities in what is set to be a busy year for the Buckinghamshire venue. It has been confirmed that deals have been made for stages of both MotoGP and World Superbike motorcycle racing series to be held there, as well as Formula One.

The circuit is the only track to hold the British Grand Prix since 1986. Though, much to the horror of die-hard F1 fans, it was feared it would lose this privilege, with the real possibility of Britain losing the most prestigious event in the motorsporting calender completely. Development of the Arena Circuit shows that there is certainly a future for the historic track, especially after a recent 17-year deal to host the event has been agreed with the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC).

SLAZENGER SIGNS STEWART

Former England cricket captain Alec Stewart has been announced as an official ambassador for top cricketing brand Slazenger. Stewart is the most capped English cricketer of all time, and played with Slazenger products throughout the majority of his career.

Stewart’s career highlights include scoring a career best Test score of 190 for England against Pakistan in 1992; which was also his fourth century in five Tests. As well as captaining his country, Stewart also became only the fourth player ever to score a century in his 100th Test, scoring 105 against the West Indies in 2000.

A crowd of nearly 11,000 made their way to the Twickenham Stoop for the inaugural Stuart Mangan Memorial Cup match, between the England and Ireland Legends.

Fans were treated to a highly competitive and entertaining game, in which the visitors, captained by Shane Byrne, were narrow victors, by 17 points to 15. Players from both sides turned back the clock to produce an entertaining match with World Cup winner, Jason Robsinson showing he still has blistering acceleration and dazzling footwork by scoring the opening try.

Irish fullback Justin Bishop was the star of the show with two tries and one conversion to his name as the Rubgly legends raised an estimated £150,000 for the Matt Hampson Trust, the IRFU Charitable Trust, and Keith Wood's Paralysed Rugby Players' Fund.

ENGLAND LEGENDS TAKE ON IRELAND AT THE STOOP

On Friday the 26th of February old rivalries will be renewed as England and Ireland Legends go head to head at the Twickenham Stoop for the first ever Stuart Mangan Memorial Match. The night before the two countries meet in the Six Nations, former England captain Martin Corry and Sean Byrne will lead out their respective sides in aid of The Matt Hampson Trust and The Paralysed Rugby Player’s Fund.

Some of the biggest names in Rugby history will be appearing at the charity event including Jason Robinson, Jason Leonard, Phil Greening, Neil Back, Rob Henderson, David Humphreys and Eric Miller to name just a few.

The game was conceived to raise money for Stuart Mangan, who was paralysed from neck down following a rugby accident whilst playing for Hammersmith & Fulham RFC in April 2008. Stuart required 24hour medical care and The Stuart Mangan Appeal was launched to help raise funds. Stuart sadly passed away in August 2009 having contracted pneumonia, but his family have chosen for the match to go ahead in his memory and to raise necessary funds to support other injured players.

Matt Hampson suffered a similar accident to Stuart whilst training with England U-21s and provided friendship and support to Stuart. With the sponsorship of the Byrne Group and Validus Re, 100% of all the funds raised will go to these deserving charities.

Bikes for Africa, a non profit organisation set up to help Aids orphans in South Africa has collected more than 200 bikes to help the children and young men who have to travel considerable distances every day just to attend school or work.

The bikes encourage these children to stay in education and therefore have a chance of gaining a better job in the future. For the young adults who have started work it means they can use their meagre wages on essentials rather than spending their earnings on getting to and from work. Bikes will also be given to care workers who regularly visit the sick and administer aid.

On the 26th of February, Run to the Beat, London’s music half marathon launched its 24 hour running challenge which involved a host of professional athletes, clubbers and media taking to the treadmills of a London nightclub.

The challenge raised money and awareness for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and newly crowned British 800m record holder, Jenny Meadows kicked off the event running the first leg of the challenge before handing over to fellow British athlete Helen Clithoroe. The 3000m Steeplechase British Record Holder then passed the baton to 2012 hopeful and 400m hurdles prospect , Perri Shakes-Drayton.

The 24 hour challenge team also included England rugby international Andy Gomarsall and rising cricket star Stephen Moore plus amateur runners and clubbers who covered an approximate total distance of 240 miles – the equivalent of running from London to Paris.

Fresh from breaking Dame Kelly Holmes’ seven-year-old British record, Jenny Meadows commented, “Winning was a fantastic feeling - it's still quite hard for me to get used to being on the podium. It's a whole new mindset. Being on the treadmill in a nightclub is certainly a new experience for me too but music is always a key part of my training.”

Commonwealth Games England has launched the ‘We Are England’ photography competition, aimed at finding the ultimate photographs that best represent England in all of its glory. The competition is to celebrate everything about England and ‘Englishness’ ahead of the Commonwealth Games that take place later this year in Delhi.

Photographs can be of anything at all that represents England – from a historic English landmark, to a traditional English game taking place in a park, or even photographs taken live at an English sporting event. All it needs to do is encompass the spirit of England to those entering.

There are some amazing prizes on offer to win, including a lunch hosted by double Olympic Gold Medalist Dame Kelly Holmes and Centre Court Wimbledon tickets.

The winners will also be invited to attend a champagne breakfast at the launch of the exhibition at the SW1 Gallery on Wednesday, April 21st, and will be joined by some of the top Commonwealth Games England athletes and representatives as well as members of the media. The exhibition of the winning photographs will run until Sunday, April 25th and entrance will be free of charge to the public.

THE WORLD'S FIRST GLOBAL CRICKET FRANCHISE IS ANNOUNCED

The Rajasthan Royals have linked up with cricket teams from around the world to create a new global sporting franchise, Royals2020, it was announced on Monday at the home of Cricket, Lords.

The winners of the inaugural Indian Premier League in 2008 will be joined by England’s Hampshire Hawks, who have been renamed the Hampshire Royals. Negotiations are ongoing with West Indies’ Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa’s Cape Cobras to become Royals, with a leading domestic team from Australia completing the franchise.

The strategy is to have a competitive team in each of the main cricketing markets around the world, their selection based on records and commitment to Twenty20 Cricket; player development; stadia; and a cultural and commercial fit with the Royals’ ethos.

BRITISH ASIAN SPORTS AWARDS 2010 WINNERS REVEALED

Boxing star Amir Khan was voted one of the winners at the Change4Life British Asian Sports Awards 2010, scooping the Here and Now Champagne Moment of the Year Award.

The ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane, celebrated the achievements of British Asians in the world of sport over the past year and it was an accolade that Khan was only too pleased to receive.

Khan said: “Every time I win an award, I get the same feeling as when I first won. It feels great to win the Champagne Moment of the Year. Last year I became world champion so it was a really good year for me.”

England women’s cricketer Isa Guha was presented with the highest accolade of the night, the Change4Life Sports Personality of the Year Award, for becoming an established international cricketer and playing an integral part in. the World Cup winning team last year.

She said: “Today’s ceremony was amazing! There were so many strong contenders up for this award and so I am truly humbled to receive it. It’s been a great year for women in sport and I hope that this award can inspire more women to get actively involved in sports.”

HENMAN FINALLY WINS AT WIMBLEDON

Tim Henman achieved on Tuesday something that he had failed to do in the entirety of his professional career- finally winning an event at Wimbledon.
Unfortunately for him, this victory came at Wimbledon Park, a mile down the road from the hallowed courts of SW19.

The event was organised to promote Slazenger’s new range of V1, V2 and V3 cricket bats; N-Pro 1, 2 and 3 hockey sticks; and the new range of Wimbledon tennis balls for this year’s All-England club showcase.

Who better than cricketers Paul Collingwood, Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett, as well as England and Great Britain hockey’s Ben Hawes and Ali Wilson to compete against Henman and test out the new products?

The challenge, in a test of the players’ power and accuracy, required them to hit a serve, score a field goal and bowl a wicket in the fastest combined speed. As always with Wimbledon, weather played a big part, with freezing conditions replacing the traditional rain in conspiring to affect the players’ performances.

In the first round- the serve- most struggled to hit the ball over the net and if they did mange to, it was usually met with a resounding ‘out’ from an over-eager member of the crowd. Tiger Tim took full advantage of his opponents’ struggles, taking what proved to be an unassailable lead, as he hit the fastest serve- albeit at a rather underwhelming 76mph, which he attributed to having not played tennis since last May.

Compere for the day, former England captain Alec Stewart didn’t need asking twice to point out to the crowd the competitors’ shortcomings in the challenges that were not in their specialist sports. As frustrations mounted, excuses started to be made- much to the amusement of Stewart, who was glad to be a spectator rather than in the competition.

Twenty20 Captain Paul Collingwood didn’t fail in keeping his former teammate’s spirits up. Before the second event- hitting a hockey ball as fast and hard as possible into a goal- he claimed to have never held a hockey stick in his life. The resulting shot admittedly may have justified his claims. It saw him slice the ball wildly in a manoeuvre that gives hope for the rest of us that though he is a master of his own craft, highlighted by an imperious 105 vs. South Africa in November, he is a novice with a hockey stick.

Plunkett, Bresnan and Henman fared better, getting the ball on target to varying levels of success and it was the latter who showed a certain amount of finesse in his shots, which he attributed to his previous experience of hockey as a schoolboy in PE lessons.

It was up to Hawes and Wilson to prove one can hit a hockey ball in cold conditions powerfully and with precision- it doesn’t slice if you hit it properly!
To the surprise of many, Henman took the fastest shot, making it two out of two and beating the European Hockey champions at their own game in the process. This cast a shadow over the reliability of the speed gun, which had already been sporadic in the tennis event.

One might think that because the speed gun was not entirely accurate that the event might be under threat, but the players were still keen to prove themselves against one another- by this point it was no longer just about power and precision, or how fast a ball can be hit. It was about endurance.

At least that’s how these internationally-acclaimed English sportsmen seemed to treat having to hit a hockey ball on a cold February morning, with their competitive edge winning over anything the elements could throw at them.

This was a far more enjoyable spectacle for this- it was a chance to see true English grit first hand. The final task of bowling a wicket as fast as possible showed that all involved had an aptitude for it; it was just some were a lot faster than others!

If the speed gun was accurate, then Tim Bresnan’s attempt of 49mph should see the description of his bowling on Wikipedia change from medium-fast to slow-slow. Perhaps he was saving himself for the forthcoming Twenty20 series vs. Pakistan later this month.

As proceedings drew to a close and all the readings were in, it was clear there was only ever going to be one winner: Henman had finally won at Wimbledon.
It seemed only fitting that Tim Henman scooped the prize and broke his Wimbledon duck, after the years of heartbreak that he and the nation endured. He received the award with a humility that Centre Court would have been proud of and promising to come back next year to defend his title.

I don’t think anyone had the heart to mention the speed gun.

Joking aside, it was thoroughly enjoyable watching some of England’s finest sportsmen out of their comfort zone and giving it their all to prove themselves as all-rounders. The event was competed in admirably high spirits, with Stewart winding up the competitors a welcome distraction from the chilly conditions.

Perhaps the harsh English winter was a bit of a shock to the system to some of the players who are used to plying their trade in warmer climes this time of year:

-Paul, Tim and Liam will join the rest of England’s cricketers to play in two Twenty20 fixtures against Pakistan in Dubai on 19th and 20th February ahead of their winter tour of Bangladesh.

-Ben and Ali, along with the rest of England’s hockey team, will be participating in the 2010 World Cup, held in India, taking place from 28 February to March 13 at New Delhi’s Dhyan Chand National stadium.

-Tim Henman has started training for next year’s event.

HELP FOR HEROES RUGBY CALENDAR

England Rugby's young guns have launched a unique calendar, to raise money for Help For Heroes and Combat Stress. The calendar features numerous young stars, such as recent British and Irish Lions, Tom Croft and Ugo Monye, Leicester’s Anthony Allen and Delon and Steffon Armitage (London Irish) in 'sexy' but thought provoking situations.

The idea for the calendar came on the back of the Help for the Heroes rugby game in 2008 which really inspired young rugby stars, Ryan Lamb and Anthony Allen, to do something to support the charity and Ryan’s father Alan Lamb, came up with the idea of the calendar and has helped them put it together.

The players featured in the calendar are Ugo Monye, Jordan Crane, Tom Croft, Anthony Allen, Dom Waldouck, Marcel Garvey, Ryan Lamb, Olly Morgan, Steffon Armitage, Nick Abendanon, Delon Armitage and Luke Narraway.

It also features, one special service man – Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher - Matt was awarded the George Cross last year for extreme valour in risking his life to safeguard the lives of his comrades, after throwing himself on top of a grenade in Afghanistan. The aim is to raise £150,000 through the calendar.

BONHOMME WINS RED BULL AIR RACE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2009

Britain’s Paul Bonhomme won the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship on Sunday 4th October with a thrilling victory in the final race of the season in Barcelona in front of a record crowd of 800,000 spectators, holding off a ferocious challenge from defending champion Hannes Arch of Austria. Bonhomme had finished a heartbreaking second in both 2007 and 2008 but got the elusive first title with a sensational performance under pressure to clinch his first title with 67 championship points to Arch’s 60. Australia’s Matt Hall took 3rd place overall, the best result ever for a rookie, with 36 points.

On a gorgeous day in Barcelona with temperatures around 25 degrees, Britain’s Nigel Lamb got the first podium of an otherwise disappointing season with second place after a brilliant performance in the final on the 6.4-km long track through a challenging 15-Air Gate obstacle course set up just metres above the surface of the Mediterranean. German rookie Matthias Dolderer treated the largest crowd of the season packed along the Front Maritim beaches to some fancy flying to take third place, his first podium.

“Fantastic, thank you Barcelona,” Bonhomme said after letting out a loud shout for joy when he heard the news he had won the title on his cockpit radio. He had watched his four-point lead melt to three on Saturday when Arch won the 1 point for fastest Qualifying time. “I'm very happy. It's been a lot of hard work but we got there in the end. It's been a huge amount of pressure. It's just a question of how you deal with it at the right time. I thought I'd better get my skates on and that worked.”

Bonhomme was the epitome of consistency with three victories and three second places even though his Edge 540 plane was not as fast as Arch’s for most of the season. Arch had outclassed Bonhomme in the Qualifying sessions this year, winning the 1 point three times compared to just once for Bonhomme. The two were the protagonists of the most riveting championship battle in the five-year history of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

ENGLAND ON ROAD TO DELHI

In October 2010, over 8,000 athletes from 71 nations will be in Delhi preparing for the start of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the last major multi-sport event to take place ahead of London 2012.

England will be sending a strong team and competing for one of the top slots on the medal table alongside Australia, Canada and other leading competing nations. They will also be competing with a new logo, which has just been revealed by Commonwealth Games England (CGE).

WE ARE ENGLAND has been developed after consultation with athletes, fans, the sporting community and the general public and it is designed to encapsulate five core values of the England team: Committed; Focused; Proud; Ambitious and Passionate.

The new England brand is complemented by a new website: www.weareengland.org containing up to date team news, athlete profiles, imagery, video and discussion, along with a countdown to Delhi 2010.

Taking place once every four years, The Commonwealth Games is the only opportunity for England to compete as a nation at a multi-sport event on the world stage, and is broadcast extensively around the world. Sky Sports TV pundit Chris Kamara and The Football Association are asking the UK's amateur footballers to show off their skills by uploading their blockbuster goals to The FA’s Official YouTube channel to mark the launch of The FA’s new Grassroots Goal of the Month competition.

Entrants simply upload the clip of their goal to www.youtube.com/thefa. At the end of each month Chris Kamara and his judging panel of experts will select a shortlist of three goals that will then go to the public vote.

The competition is open to any player and team playing in affiliated 11-a-side adult football.

Most competitive line up ever expected for BIRC 2009

Five times British Indoor Rowing Championship (BIRC) winner, Graham Benton is aiming to outshine the best from the GB Rowing Squad this weekend (22 November), making for the UK’s fastest indoor rowing race ever. In 2008, former elite cricketer and self confessed ‘gym-rat’ Graham crushed the opposition, rowing 2000m in just 5 minutes 46 seconds a full 15 seconds ahead of the field. This year he’s expected to beat that time once again to gain his sixth consecutive BIRC title.

BIRC 2009 will also feature Britain’s top Olympic rowers making a rare appearance in racing on home soil to challenge Graham to the top spot. Over 100 other competitors will race against some of the GB rowing team and Graham Benton in the men’s open category.

Now in its 19th year, BIRC has already made its name, not only as the UK’s largest mass-participation indoor sporting event but also as the world’s biggest indoor rowing event. London will play a vital role in England’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup and ‘London United’ have launched a video to show how football lies at the heart of all the capital's communities.

The film will show the diverse ranges of sport in the city as well as featuring iconic landmarks and players who give their views on why London is the perfect location for the FIFA 2018 World Cup Finals.It focuses on the tradition of playing football in a park, and though the film captures the passion of the amateur game, the video also features shots of Wembley Stadium and some of England’s biggest football stars, who themselves received their footballing education in the many parks London has to offer.

England stars waxing lyrical on their park playing days include:

Ashley Cole: “Some of my best early memories of playing football in a park were for my local Sunday team. The team was called Puma and we played at Hackney Marshes. I played alongside Ledley King and J Lloyd Samuel and we played against the likes of John Terry, and Bobby Zamora."

John Terry: “I lived in Barking as a youngster and right at the back of my house, literally just over the other side of the fence, was Newlands Park. That's where I played all of my football growing up. It was always me and my brother against our two next door neighbours, Danny and Billy. We used to pretend we were in the World Cup, and would be different teams each time.”

Peter Crouch: “I used to play at Pitshanger Park, which was my local park as a kid. It was the best time for me, playing football with school friends. It is great to score goals in big stadiums but I had the most fun when I was playing in the park.”

Jermaine Defoe: “When I first started playing it was at the back of my nan's house in Canning Town, east London. There was a field I used to play on with a few of my cousins and my mates who lived round there. We would use anything as a goal. Sometimes it could just be trees if they weren't too far apart or jackets.”

STREET STYLE KING CROWNED

23rd November saw the UK final of Red Bull Street Style, a freestyle football tournament featuring 16 of the top freestylers in the country. Set in the stunning St Michael’s Church, London, 17 year-old Andrew Henderson rose above the competition to take the honours and book his ticket to South Africa for the Red Bull Street Style World Final in April 2010.

The final, watched by 200 people, saw Henderson take on last years champion John Whetton for a place in South Africa. Henderson produced a number of jaw dropping combos at the right time to win over the judges.

Among the judges was Dutch legend Edgar Davids, who said: “The UK final was incredible, the best so far and the standard in the final was spectacular.”

Following on from the success of last year’s final in Sao Paulo, there will be 57 countries from around the globe sending Street Stylers to compete in Cape Town in April next year.

CHILDREN 'REACH FOR THE STARS'

The Variety Club, one of the UK’s longest running charities dedicated to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people, hosted their inaugural ‘Reach for the Stars’ fundraising dinner at The Plaisterers’ Hall, London on Thursday 26th November.

Triple Paralympics Gold Medallist Giles Long, Olympic Swimmer Mark Foster and England Cricketer Owais Shah, launched the new programme which aims to support athletes looking to enter the 2012 Paralympics’ Games in London.

Due to severe cuts in Government funding for young disabled athletes, many who meet the SportsAid challenging criteria are left without the necessary funding. The Variety Club Disability Sports Committee has been working hard over the past few months to raise funds for the resources needed to support these athletes.

Anne Wadsworth, Chairman of the VCDSC, said “Reach for the Stars is an event with one aim – to help deserving young people, who are already giving everything that is within their power to give, to ‘Reach for the Stars’ in 2012.”

MBNA GOES FOOTIE CARD CRAZY

The lengths to which UK football fans will go for their beloved teams are revealed in a poll by MBNA, the largest provider of football credit cards.

The findings, based on responses from over 1000 UK football fans, show the tireless efforts that followers go to and the commitment that they have for their club.

No distance too far:

Fans across the country are prepared to travel far and wide to support their teams. The average football fan lives 90 miles from their home team.

- Over half of all football fans, 55%, have travelled over 100 miles. This equates to 11 million fans
- 7% have travelled over 500 miles
- 5% (over one million fans) have travelled 1000 miles to see their team play. This is the equivalent of a 16 hour-long journey
- 3% of fans who live over 200 miles from their home ground go every week to watch their team

Mark Goodwin, Aston Villa fan, said: “I have not missed a domestic game since 1980 and have only missed one game in all competitions since 1983. I have travelled all over the world to countries including Russia, Turkey, Denmark, France, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and Austria. Last year I was on holiday in Portugal when Villa qualified for the Intertoto Cup. I immediately cut my holiday short by two days, flew back to the UK and jumped straight on another flight to Iceland to see the match.”

No occasion too important:

The poll reveals that true supporters will do anything to be there on match day.

- 3% have missed the birth of their child to go to a football match
- Almost 18%, have missed an important family gathering
- 10% of fans have missed the wedding of a close family member or friend to see a match
- 4% have missed a funeral

Lee Griffin, Manchester City fan, revealed: “I have missed many important family occasions including my sister-in-law’s fiances stag weekend and countless birthdays. I even bought my original Maine Road season ticket seats so that, on the very few occasions I am unable to make it to a game, I can re-create the ground in my lounge.”

Simon Harding, Arsenal fan, said: “I promised my girlfriend when we got together that I would be prepared to miss a match for her. However, despite my promise, this year I have missed Valentine’s Day and her birthday! I daren’t tell her my plans for Boxing Day.”

John Greaves, MBNA spokesperson said: “I don’t believe there is a better example of a passionate and loyal person than a true football fan. Our new research demonstrates the great lengths fans go to every week and the emotion and energy they invest in supporting their club.”

No information too much:

Over three quarters of respondents talk about football at least weekly, with a similar proportion expending at least five hours of their week on football related activity.

- The top 1% of fans spend over 40 hours a week watching football matches and related news.

Fans turn to TV, websites, newspapers and official club websites to keep up-to-date with news on their team.

BECKHAM SUPPORTS COACHING FOR HOPE

David Beckham has attended a ‘Coaching for Hope’ CfH session at the Khaylitsha Township, Cape Town to meet with youngsters and coaches involved with the scheme. The visit was arranged by The English FA as part of its ’International Development Programme’ and David was joined by former South African captain Lucas Radebe and FA Chairman David Triesman.

The session was staged at Ikhusi P.P. School, Khaylitsha Township, Cape Town and featured a CfH workshop involving HIV awareness techniques. David Beckham was taken on a tour of the facility by CfH young leader Michael, 17 before joining more than 30 youngsters for a question and answer session and kicking off a specially arranged tournament.

Coaching for Hope is the official international charity of The FA for 2009, and is an innovative programme which uses football to create better futures for young people in West and Southern Africa. By organizing training courses with professionals from UK clubs and developing social education curricula that address the needs of local communities, CfH trains local football coaches and youth workers to recognized FA standards as well as gain skills to educate and enable the youth in their communities to address such issues as HIV and AIDS and Substance Abuse.

The British Horseracing Authority has joined up with Tickets For Troops (T4T) to offer servicemen and women thousands of free tickets to racecourses across Britain. The aim is to support the work of military personnel and veterans by offering free tickets to big events. Courses such as Carlisle, Musselburgh and Ffos Las, have pledged unlimited tickets to all their 2010 fixtures, while other courses such as Wolverhampton, Lingfield Park, Ayr and Southwell have donated tickets into their thousands.

Every racecourse across Britain offers FREE entry to children aged 16 and under for most fixtures, meaning that Troops can enjoy a day at the races with their family, at no extra cost.

Tickets for Troops is a new and independent non-profit organisation. The sole aim of the initiative is to secure the donation of tickets to major sporting and cultural events, and make them available through a dedicated website to all serving members of HM Forces and those medically discharged from the Forces since military action in Afghanistan began in 2001. Applicants simply register at www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk. For each booking a donation of just £1 is requested, with proceeds being donated across various charities.

Volleyball England has launched its Community Development Coaching programme at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering, inducting 14 dynamic individuals selected to help increase participation across England.

The CDC programme forms part of Volleyball England’s “Can You Dig It” campaign aimed at raising awareness of volleyball, encouraging more people to get involved by strengthening links between schools and clubs.

The Community Development Coaches’ role is diverse: they will train players, encourage potential event organisers and volunteers, ensure talented young players receive quality coaching and opportunities to maximise their potential, and put in place clear, structured pathways. The CDCs will work in schools, clubs and community venues to develop sustainable programmes within each region. Volleyball England hopes to have 20 CDCs in post by April 2010.

The programme has received investment from Volleyball England and partners including School Sport Partnerships, Premier League Football Clubs, Primary Care Trusts, Local Authorities, County Sports partnerships and commercial leisure providers.

The British Swimming Team, powered by British Gas, are finalising their preparations for the 13th LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships which begins tomorrow in the Turkish capital of Istanbul.

The four-day event will see some of Britain’s seasoned athletes, including European record holder Hannah Miley, join a number of new faces on the senior international scene. Speaking ahead of the competition Miley said:

“It’s been a really good year with a few ups and downs for me and having come so close to a medal at the World’s I’m really looking forward to competing here. Last year, I came so close to a medal, coming 4th twice so I’m hoping to step it up a gear and improve on that”.

Previous medal winner Matthew Clay added:

“I haven’t competed at the European Short Course for a couple of years but having medalled previously I’m setting my sights high and hoping to do so again. This is such a great event and a fantastic learning experience for some of the younger athletes within our team. Hopefully the tough competition here will entice them to swim that little bit faster”.

Ten time European Short Course champion Mark Foster, who will be travelling out to Istanbul to offer his support to the team commented:

“I’m really looking forward to going out to Istanbul to cheer on the team. This is a great opportunity to give some up and coming athletes international experience and we also have a few swimmers who could do really well.

“I’m particularly excited to see what Hannah Miley, Eli Faulkner and Jess Dickons have to offer, they each have a lot of potential to get it right on the day and our female British swimmers have such strength and depth at the moment which is fantastic”.

Ding Junhui was the lucky winner at the Pukka Pies UK Championship trophy from Telford this weekend. His prize, as well as the trophy was his body weight in Pukka Pies!

The Chinese superstar defeated world champion John Higgins in a closely fought final - 10-8 - to take the title for the second time following his victory in 2005.

Ding was the lightest of the four semi-finalists - weighing in at 69kg - and based on an average of 4 pies per kilogramme will receive a delivery of 276 pies from Pukka Pies, who were in their first year of snooker sponsorship.

HATTON'S 'MEANING OF LIFE'

Former World boxing champion Ricky Hatton MBE has revealed what life means to him in a new book entitled 'The Handbook of Life".

Hatton, who enjoyed huge success in the international boxing arena, winning numerous World Titles including the WBA Welterweight Championship said:

"My most life-changing experience? I suppose when I beat Kostya Tszyu in front of 22,000 people at the MEN Arena Manchester and became the undisputed champion of the world at light welterweight. I think that moment will stay with me forever. I was accepted and recognised as the best light welterweight in the world and my world changed, it lead to massive fights and more world titles in America."

The Handbook of Life featuring Hatton's revelations is a compilation of answers to the question: 'what is the best advice on life you've ever been given?' The book will raise money for North West-based children's hospices, Beechwood Cancer Care and Children in Need.

The Route

VOTING FOR ASIAN SPORTS AWARDS OPENS

Voting lines are now officially open to the public for the Change4Life British Asian Sports Awards (lines close Thursday 4th February).

Amongst the shortlisted hopefuls this year are Formula One racer Adam Khan, Yorkshire and England cricketer Adil Rashid, Queens Park Rangers Vice-Chairman Amit Bhatia and England women’s cricketer Isa Guha. DALLAGLIO SUPPORTS YOUNG GUNS

Former England Rugby Union Captain, and 2003 World Cup winner, Lawrence Dallaglio, is on a mission to help find rugby’s stars of the future through a new initiative headed by pesto pioneers Sacla in conjunction with the RFU. The initiative will see the Italian food manufacturers sponsor ALL the grass-root rugby festivals across England this year, a programme involving over 40,000 youngsters.

The first festival kicks off on 22nd February and the 104 Sacla’ Rugby Festivals for children aged between 10 and 16 years across the UK, will reach their exciting climax with an exclusive training session with Dallaglio at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 5th June. One child from each festival will be chosen to attend the Sacla’ National Training Day based on qualities of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, the Core Values of the sport.

Children who attend the festivals will receive Sacla’ skills cards, which will offer special tips from Lawrence to help them track their progress and improvement. Parents will also have access to healthy eating tips and recipe cards to make sure their children are getting the nutrition they need for action on the pitch, goody bags and a chance to taste Dallaglio by Sacla’ sauces.

The festivals will also feature SOS Kit Aid containers for clubs and individuals to drop their unwanted rugby kit. The IRB run project, which redistributes kit to less advantaged children from around the world, provides others with a chance to play the game, a core component of the Sacla’ social commitment.

FIRST EVER ECO DRIVING CHALLENGE

The Peugeot Eco Cup will follow a 1000 kilometre course from Paris to Geneva, with the winners being those arriving at the finish within set time targets having used the least fuel.

Entry to the Peugeot Eco Cup is open to any qualified driver. Would-be competitors can sign up at the dedicated website www.ecocup.peugeot.com which can also be found via www.peugeot.co.uk by 15 February 2010.

The website features a range of eco-driving tips, an online eco-driving test and details of the four different Peugeot cars available for the event. Applicants select the car category they prefer to compete in, enter their details and submit a 140 word description of what makes a good eco driver.

Peugeot will select 72 competitors from the online entries and then randomly draw entrants to be invited to take the challenge, with four each
representing the 18 European countries (and accompanied by a team-mate of their choice), to compete in four different Peugeot cars.

With strict equivalent weights for each model used, the 72 vehicles will all set off from Paris on Sunday, 28th February 2010 towards Geneva via a compulsory 1,000 kilometre route to be covered within the 30-36 hour permitted period.

For each model, the candidate having consumed the least fuel at the end of the course will win a new car. Winners will be announced and the keys to the vehicles will be handed over on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 on the Peugeot stand at the Geneva Motor Show.

ITALY GO TUG WAR!

The World Indoor Tug of War Championships will take place on 25th-28th February in Italy. The club competitions will take place on the first two days with the International event taking place on the second two days. The weight categories being contested are 560 kilos, 600 kilos, 640 kilos and 680 kilos, this being the combined weight of the 8 pullers.

England will be represented in all four of the above weight categories. Rather than selecting a squad from various teams, England will be represented by the current national champions in each weight class. The teams are as follows:

Norton TOWC from Stoke-on-Trent will represent England at 560 kilos and are currently the European Outdoor Champions at 600 kilos. Norton won the gold medal at 560 kilos at the national indoor championships in December to qualify to represent at this weight.

Kilroe TOWC from Manchester will be represent England at 600 kilos. Kilroe represented England on 5 consective occasions at World Indoor Championships at 560 kilos, winning a gold medal for England on each occasion.

Sheen TOWC from Staffordshire will represent England at 640 kilos, having won this weight, and four other weight classes at the national indoor championships.

Raunds TOWC from Northamptonshire will represent England at 680 kilos. Raunds finished as runners up at the national indoor championships in December and are previous world champions in this weight class, winning the gold medal for England in 1997.

DANNY MILLS PREPARES FOR HIS MARATHON CHALLENGE

Former England International, Danny Mills had plenty of time to think about life after football when a serious knee injury ruled him out of action for more than 18 months. Realising that he would never fully recover to play professionally, the former right back announced – in August 2009 - that he was retiring from the game, at just 32 years of age.

So what would come next for the man who helped England progress to the quarter finals of the 2006 World Cup? The answer is attempting the Brighton Marathon in a wheelchair.

“Once I picked up the injury and realised that this was a potentially career threatening injury, I started thinking about what I could do if the worst came to the worst.” he explains. “When it did I thought about running a marathon for charity as it was something that I had always wanted to do, but with 2 bad knees it wasn’t something that I could have done any time soon”

Mills had always worked closely with a number of charities and became a patron of ASBAH – the Association of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus – after his young son, Archie died in 2002 from the condition. While still plying his trade in the Premiership with the likes of Leeds, Middlesbrough and Manchester City, he was able to raise more than £300,000, and set up a helpline for a cause very close to his heart.

“Being involved with a predominantly disabled charity I thought maybe I should try and do a marathon in a wheelchair and raise funds and awareness that way. I got in touch with Joyce Cook, who is the chairperson of the National Association of Disabled Supporters (NADS), she was thoroughly behind the idea and has been really supportive throughout the whole process.”

With the support of the NADS came the idea that Mills would not only attempt to complete the Brighton Marathon in a wheelchair, but also that he would experience life as a wheelchair user for a week. “Obviously the modern grounds are great for disabled supporters, the City of Manchester Stadium and Wembley are fantastic, but there are plenty of issues with sporting venues. One of NADS’ big campaigns is ‘a level playing field’.” Mills continues to explain. “It’s about access for everybody, no matter where it is, whether it is at a football ground or a badminton tournament. If disabled fans want to go and watch sport then it shouldn’t be a hassle for them to go and do it, you should be able to support your team the same as everybody else.”

The ex-defender is clearly very passionate about the cause and recognises the day to day difficulties that come with living in a wheelchair. “I started training outside but soon realised that I was really going to struggle. In the race wheelchairs, you are going around 8 or 9mph, well that’s the speed I am going at, but top guys go much quicker of course. Even at that speed trying to steer round tight corners is very hard while trying to stop quickly is very difficult. Even simple things like going up and down curbs is incredibly tricky so that opened my eyes to the everyday struggles.”

With the Brighton Marathon taking place on the 18th of April, the task facing Mills is a daunting one. Used to covering plenty of ground in his playing days, he will now be solely relying on the strength in his arms. Yet, Mills speaks with absolute confidence and knows that all the hard work and months of training will be worth it if he can complete the 26.2 mile course.

“I first started training back in September, before I actually got the wheelchair. I did a month in the gym working solely on the arms and once I got the chair, I did three months of training on rollers, which is the equivalent of a treadmill for a wheelchair,” describes Mills. “Since then I have been working on the track and I have now completed half marathon distances outside in the chair. I just hope that I can finish the race and raise awareness for this great cause.”

Sarah Ayton, one of the original three blondes in a boat, has unveiled her bid to become the first British woman to win three successive Olympic gold medals.

With the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games now less than 30 months away, Sarah Ayton has announced her plans to campaign for a third gold in London, in the two person 470 dinghy with her team-mate confirmed as seasoned 470 campaigner Saskia Clark. Their long-awaited news was revealed in conjunction with the announcement that Volvo Car UK will be backing their campaign as part of the Team Volvo for life sponsorship programme in addition to their support from Skandia Team GBR, the British sailing team.

Sarah Ayton has not rushed her decision, making sure she has picked the right boat and crew to succeed, but also manage her work life balance as a mother and one of Britain’s top athletes. “After thinking really hard about my campaign and experimenting with match racing, it was an easy decision in the end to choose the 470. BT PARALYMPIC WORLD CUP INTRODUCES 7-A-SIDE FOOTBALL

The BT Paralympic World Cup has introduced 7-a-side football to their 2010 event.

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given and Burnley F.C. players Wade Elliott and Michael Duff were in attendance to welcome the sport, in a demonstration held at the Manchester Arndale, along with members of the GB 7-a-side team.

Shay Given said: “The BT Paralympic World Cup has become a well known event in Manchester and it’s fantastic to see Football 7-a-side introduced as a new sport. The team has a lot of talent and we wish the GB squad competing in the event the best of luck and will keep an eye on their progress through the competition.”

The annual BT Paralympic World Cup acknowledges the sporting prowess of elite disability players, in an adaptation of the sport for athletes with cerebral palsy.

The GB team will compete against teams from the Netherlands, USA and the Republic of Ireland.

The countries have been selected to align with a new team challenge, which sees Great Britain take on teams from Europe, the Americas and the Rest of the World.

They will be competing across four sports for the BT Paralympic World Cup trophy. Football 7-a-side joins Wheelchair Basketball, Swimming and Athletics, events which are in their sixth consecutive year in the competition.

The GB captain Jordan Raynes said: “I’m very excited that Football 7-a-side has been included in the BT Paralympic World Cup. I live and play in Manchester, where we have a strong following for our county disability league and to now have international competition in my home city means so much to me.

“To have an elite event outside of the Paralympic Games with other leading Football nations will be imperative to the team’s progression as we look forward to the 2012 Paralympic Games and look to build on our seventh place finish in Beijing in 2008.”

HOLLYOAKS CAST TO SING FOR ENGLAND

Cast members of Hollyoaks, the popular Channel 4 drama, will be releasing an England 2010 World Cup song for charity.

The single, ‘Sing for England’, will be released on May 23, with all profits being donated to the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, which raises money for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson in the show and captain of the Hollyoaks celebrity football team said: “All the lads in the team are passionate about football and we love playing regularly to raise money for charity, so it only seems natural to show our support for the England football team in South Africa by releasing 'Sing for England'”.

NPOWER TO LIGHT UP THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Football League has agreed a new three-year title sponsorship with energy provider npower. From the beginning of the 2010/11 season, The League’s flagship competition will be titled ‘the npower Football League’ with its three divisions being titled ‘the npower Championship’, ‘npower League 1’ and ‘npower League 2’.

Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said: “Like us, npower recognise the extraordinary attachment that Football League clubs have with people living in their local communities. This agreement will provide real benefit to those people.”

As part of the new agreement, each of The League’s 72 clubs will receive a grant from the npower Charity Fund for a bespoke community initiative in their local area. Fans will also be rewarded for switching their gas and/or electricity supply to npower.

KICK4LIFE : CHANGING LIVES THROUGH SPORT

The founder of the Kick4life charity organisation Steve Fleming is launching a book called ‘Eleven’, featuring 11 stories from Lesotho aids victims. The charity is hoping to raise awareness and funds with all of the proceeds going to the charity.

Kick4life was founded in 2005 and uses the power of football and sport to inspire, unite and make a difference to some of the most disadvantaged children in the world. Focusing efforts in Lesotho in southern Africa the programme focuses on tackling HIV by providing sports-based education, voluntary testing plus support in education and employment.

Since the start of the charity, Kick4life has helped 25,000 orphans and vulnerable children in Lesotho where more than 100,000 children have been orphaned. England boss Fabio Capello - who will be travelling to South Africa with his World Cup hopefuls in June – is a supporter of the charity and once visited the site to see how football has helped the young children.

“I have seen first hand how Kick4Life is actually changing lives for the better. This summer all eyes will be on South Africa, and it is my hope that we can harness the power of the game to transform the lives of some of the world’s most disadvantaged people, and continue to fight this disease.”

England’s ‘Raging Bull’ Phil Vickery, has helped to launch a new Rugby shirt that will be sold to raise funds to help two-year-old meningitis victim Marshall Janson.

Marshall lost both his hands and both his legs last year following an attack of meningitis, four days after his first birthday. The HANDSTAND Appeal, www.handstand.org.uk, was set up to raise funds to buy Marshall prosthetic limbs with its aim to raise £850,000-£950,000. The costs are so high because Marshall’s prosthetic limbs will have to be changed constantly as he grows, as often as once a year.

Michael Rayner, physiotherapist to AFC Wimbledon of the Blue Square Premiership, is a man on a mission. Together with fans Ross Montague, Russell Smith and player Tom Woolgar, they will be setting off from Waterloo Station on Wednesday 21st April 2010 at 11.00am and cycling to Gateshead International Stadium, home of Gateshead FC.

This is the venue for AFC Wimbledon’s last game of the season, on Saturday 24th April. The team hope to raise over £4,000 to help Michael purchase the very latest sports performance and recovery, heart rate technology for his players.

Last summer 33 year old Michael, who has been at AFC Wimbledon for the last 6 seasons, visited the Healthpod at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth in London to see this specialist technology. His hope is that it can help improve the player’s performance and also aid their recovery.

To help raise the funds AFC Wimbledon will be printing ‘Golden Time’ Tickets. The tickets will cost £2.00 and the winning ticket will be the one that matches the total ride time for the 4 stages of the 302 mile trip. The winner will receive £302.00 – a pound for every mile the boys cycle.

LOTTERY PLAYERS RAISE £500M FOR LONDON 2012

The National Lottery announced that with just over two years to go, £500 million has been raised by lottery players for London 2012 through sales of its specially designated games.

In total, The National Lottery aims to raise £750 million for London 2012 through sales of such games, where all the Good Causes money raised goes towards the forthcoming Olympic Games and Paralympic Games – part of a wider lottery contribution of £2.2 billion.

To celebrate the landmark, The National Lottery has launched a nationwide search for the UK’s expert in all things Olympic. The Games Brain of Britain is the ultimate test of Olympic and Paralympic Games knowledge. It will challenge sports fans to determine who deserves the title of the UK’s expert on the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Fronting the campaign is Olympic Games legend Sir Steve Redgrave MBE, Paralympic wheelchair athlete and gold medallist David Weir MBE and World Champion gymnast Beth Tweddle MBE.

The quiz is available to play online at www.national-lottery.co.uk/gamesbrain and made up of three rounds of five questions, answered against the clock, which get progressively harder as players move through the test. FOLLOW RUNNERS EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

On April 25th 2010, more than 35,000 runners will take part in the Virgin London Marathon. This year, for the third year running, the adidas WAP tracker system will allow over half a million supporters to track any of the runners as they make their way through the Capital. The innovative system will pick up the runners position every 5km and feed it back to supporters.

For the first time ever this year, the WAP tracker has been updated to allow each runner’s progress to be followed via an application on facebook at www.facebook.com/adidasrunning. The app will automatically update the runner’s position as they progress around the course and also allows supporters to see their race history at every 5km stage.

MAN CITY IN NYC

New York City became the surprising location for the unveiling of Manchester City’s new away strip for for the 2010/11 season, made by Umbro. As part of their pre season tour of the US, City stars Joe Hart, Emmanuel Adebayor, Micah Richards, Dedryck Boyata, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge and Kolo Toure turned up to play locals in a pick-up game in Sara D. Roosevelt Park.

After drawing 1-1 against the locals, Touré said: “We loved playing against the New Yorkers. They gave us a good game on their home turf. The pitch right in the heart of the city and the atmosphere around it gave us a glimpse of how big football is in New York. It was a fun game to play in and a great way to debut our new away kit”.

Pierre Byman, who lives Downtown and played against the City boys, said: “It was an honour to play against the best. We scored the first goal which was amazing but after that City stepped up a gear and by the end of it they were toying with us a bit”.
