Ajax have offered defender Toby Alderweireld a new contract in a bid to fend off interest from Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old defender has played an integral role in Ajax’s back-to-back Eredivisie successes over the past two years, and has helped fill the void left by Jan Vertonghen, who departed for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
The defender has since spoken of the possibility of following his compatriot to the Premier League, recently identifying Arsenal and Tottenham as clubs that would appeal to him.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer recently conceded that this summer could be when the Belgian finally decides to move on from the Amsterdam ArenA, but has revealed that Alderweireld and Manchester United target Christian Eriksen will be offered new deals in efforts to keep them at the club.
“Alderweireld and Eriksen have received an offer from Ajax," de Boer said from club conference, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet report. “I hope they will stay longer in Ajax.”
De Boer’s comments come just days after he admitted that Alderweireld, Eriksen and Newcastle United target Siem De Jong were likely to leave in the summer transfer window.
“In summer, however, I think there are three or four players who will leave,” de Boer is quoted as saying in Voetbal International. "Then I think of Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Siem de Jong. If that happens, we will have to start over.”
