Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is keeping a close eye on the contract situation of Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo who is out of contract at the end of the season.
The Reds have lost defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva for the rest of the season and Dalglish is considering bringing in another option as he attempts to secure a top four finish.
The Merseyside club currently sit sixth in the league and are hoping to try and push on in the second half of the season, however, Dalglish is aware that he may need to further strengthen his squad.
Montolivo has been linked with a possible move as he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract and would be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
AC Milan were recently linked with the Italy international but the players agent Giovanni Branchini has stressed that Fiorentina are keen to keep hold of the defensive midfielder.
"At the moment, there is nothing happening. There are no options. The interest of AC Milan? That's more speculation in the press than it is a realistic option," Branchini told Sky Sport Italia.
The 26-year-old has been in superb form for both Fiorentina and Italy, where he has formed a formidable partnership with Daniele De Rossi, and is considered one of the best midfielders in Serie A.
Liverpool are still hopeful that Montolivo will turn down a new contract at the Italian side and will be keeping a close eye on the contract negotiations at the club.
