Liverpool have started watching Benfica youngster Lazar Markovic as they join a number of European clubs in the transfer race for his signature.
The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool chief scout Barry Hunter was on hand to watch his 75 minute performance against Republic of Ireland in Serbia’s 2-1 international friendly win last week.
A versatile midfielder, Markovic has been an influential player in Benfica’s charge for the Portuguese title this season, netting five goals in 19 league games, including a vital equaliser against title rivals Sporting Lisbon back in August.
The article reports that Chelsea had watched the 20-year-old midfielder prior to his move to Benfica at the start of the season.
Liverpool would have to beat Chelsea to his signature, having been granted a first option clause at £12.5million, although it is thought after the purchase of Nemanja Matic they would no longer be interested in such a deal, the Daily Mail reveals.
