Middlesbrough are hoping to take advantage of the return to fitness of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard by landing his fellow midfielder Jonjo Shelvey on-loan until the end of the season.
Shelvey was recalled from a loan spell at Blackpool earlier this season after Lucas Leiva suffered a season ending injury and he has been named on the bench regularly over recent weeks.
However, Shelvey has had limited opportunities to shine in the first team and it is believed that any loan deal would be dependant on the fitness of Gerrard.
The England midfielder scored a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Everton on Tuesday night and that could signal good news for the club hoping to land Shelvey for the rest of the campaign.
Blackpool are interested in bringing the 20-year-old back to Bloomfield Road, while Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray is also keen to secure the services of the young midfielder.
The Middlesbrough Gazette believes that Mowbray is working hard to try and complete a deal for Shelvey who scored six goals in just 10 games while playing in the Championship for Blackpool.
Liverpool certainly have a number of options in central midfield as was shown on Tuesday night as Jordan Henderson was played on the right, with Jay Spearing in the middle and Charlie Adam on the bench.
