Liverpool have been encouraged to sign Nigel De Jong from AC Milan by current midfielder Lucas Leiva.
The injured Brazilian is normally the first choice to play the holding midfield role, but the Reds have very little cover in this area and De Jong could be an ideal man to come in and shore up their midfield.
And the door could have opened for Liverpool to sign the Dutchman after Michael Essien joined the San Siro club – potentially knocking De Jong down the pecking order.
Leiva could see his own position come under threat if De Jong comes to Anfield, particularly if he establishes himself in the time whilst the Brazilian is injured.
But he still wants his club to bring in reinforcements in his position.
“All I heard about that were rumours. We still have a few days until the window closes,” Lucas told ESPN Brazil, taken from the Express.
“Obviously my injury will keep me away for five, six weeks, but I don’t think that has a lot to do with it.
“Anyone who gets hired will be to strengthen the squad.
“We have very few midfielders in our team and especially in my position. It’s nothing that I see as threatening. We’ll just have to wait and see.
“De Jong is a player who was very successful here in Manchester City, he’s a great player.
“If he comes, it will be good, because it will help to make the group stronger.
“Unfortunately, we had a few injury issues with some other big players, so it’s always good to have a strong squad.”
The Reds are expected to make one or two moves on the final day of the transfer window, and whilst De Jong may not excited the fans as much as an attacking player would, he could prove to be a solid acquisition.
