Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is stepping up his pursuit of a midfielder and has set his sights on AZ Alkmaar's Rasmus Elm.
Ferugson is in the search of a new midfielder once the January transfer window opens for business as in recent weeks he has lost Anderson, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverly and Darren Flecther through injury.
During the course of the summer transfer window Manchester united were being linked with moves for Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder and Tottenham Luka Modric with both deals failing to materialise.
However it is now believed Ferguson has been impressed with Sweden international Elm both with his performances for Alkmaar and in the recent match against England.
Elms's agent Patrick Mork told Swedish publication Expressen: "I cannot comment on individual clubs, as I know what will happen,
"It is boring but I must be, I can say that many of the biggest clubs are following Rasmus.
"You should not be surprised at anything in terms of Rasmus, he is now the hottest player in Holland and obviously has a very high status in Europe."
It is believed Manchester United are ready to table an offer in the region of £17million for the 23-year-old.
