Team GB women’s hockey forward Alex Danson has told Sportsvibe that she is looking forward to the Investec London Cup in June after an incredible London Olympics.
Danson was part of the Team GB side to win a bronze medal at the 2012 Games and ahead of returning to training next week she is hoping that they can build on last summer’s success.
“The Investec London Cup is our qualification for the World Cup and some of the best teams in the world will be there.
“It is a great opportunity on the back of London to keep the support going and pushing the sport forward.”
Hockey has had a huge growth in participation since the London Olympics and it had a huge affect on Danson, “It, without question, surpassed any expectations that we had as a team and I had as an individual going into it.
“It was so overwhelming and we all felt so proud to be British.”
The 27-year-old is also expecting to be at the 2016 Games in Rio, she said, “We have secured our funding for Rio 2016 and ultimately that is our next focus, but in the short term we are just looking forward to getting back on the hockey pitch”
She was speaking to Sportsvibe at the Sky Sports Living for Sport awards last week, which as an athlete mentor, is something that she takes great pride in.
“I’m so lucky and I love my sport, but I never thought I would find something that would make me feel the same way,” she said.
“I’m genuinely so passionate about it and Sky Sports Living for Sport understands that. It is a great way of improving young people's confidence and giving them an opportunity to improve their lives.
“If I visit 10 schools and have an impact on one person that is great and it fills me with pride. “
