Players Looking to Strike it Lucky for England

Posted on 24/11/2009

As the debate rumbles on about Fabio Capello’s squad selection for the 2010 World Cup, we ask which strikers should go to South Africa? Wayne Rooney and Jermaine Defoe seem to be dead certs. But the rest are fighting all the way to the airport. So let’s look at the other candidates.

Emile Heskey: Has been a regular starter for England this season but cannot break his way into the Aston Villa side. This could be a problem for him if Capello continues his stance that all players must be playing regularly for their club side.

Carlton Cole: Has found himself included in most of Capello’s recent squads, putting in some impressive performances. Saying this, Capello has never started the ex-Chelsea forward. He continues to score for West Ham this season; and this could be enough to convince Capello he is worth a place.

Gabriel Agbonlahor: Started the game against Belarus and didn’t let anybody down. Has been in and out of Capello’s squads and it seems that Capello still hasn’t made his mind up on the Aston Villa forward yet.

Darren Bent: The Sunderland striker is the Premier League’s top scorer and his form saw him starting against Brazil. Replaced prematurely after 55 mins, it seems like Capello is not impressed but if he continues to bang in goals he may sneak a seat on that plane.

Peter Crouch: The lanky striker has been a regular fixture in the England squad under Capello, including a start and two goals against Belarus. Has a brilliant strike rate for England but will this be enough?

Michael Owen: The forgotten man. The Manchester United hitman has been in decent form, bagging in the Premier League, Champions League and the Carling Cup. However, still continues to be overlooked by Capello, but with 40 goals in 89 Caps, many believe he should be included, even if it is only as a substitute.

Have we missed anybody out? Who would you take to the World Cup?

  • Good article, and true. He should really consider his options as Crouch is poor!
