Yes, I know, what drunken Welsh rugby star Andy Powell did with his stolen golf buggy on the hard shoulder of the M4 is totally wrong and a bad example and he was rightly dropped from the test squad but ...... there is something endearing about it, nonetheless. For a start, it's totally nuts. Is it any wonder that his nickname within the squad is "Brain Dead?" What on earth possessed him to do it? Second, it is clear he is a passionate Welsh rugby player who will be mortified to discover he is now out of the team because of his spontaneous, alcohol-fuelled actions. He didn't cheat. He didn't punch anyone. True, he broke the law but, in essence, he was just a very silly boy. The public's reaction to all this is telling. Has Powell been condemned? Hardly at all. At the last count the Facebook appreciation society for Powell after his motorway jaunt had reached 20,000 members. In an age where our stars are now finely-polished automatons governed by their image and their sponsors, Powell's ill-judged antics were a throwback to the days of degenerates. As a yardstick I bet people's future reaction when Powell admits to how he obtained a criminal record will be to smile, not condemn. One tip, though. If you ever play golf with the man, make sure you do drive the buggy!
