In the first round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham, British No.1 Heather Watson has lost in straight sets to 22-year-old qualifier Aleksandra Krunic.

Krunic, a qualifier from Serbia, beat Watson 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to reach the second round.

According to BBC Sport, Watson, 23, who was taking part in the grass-court event as preparation for Wimbledon was knocked out at the same stage last year, with Krunic’s fellow countrywoman åÊAna Ivanovic claiming the title.åÊ

The loss was Watson’s first since losing to Sloane Stephens in the second round of the French Open, having said before the game on Tuesday that she was looking forward to playing on grass, her favoured surface.åÊ
