And so we start the week basking in an early Spring warmth of British sporting success after a weekend that first saw Anthony Joshua become heavyweight champion of the world and then Danny Willett claim the green jacket last night at Augusta.

Throw in the fact that we have the current formula One world champ, we are the holders of the Davis Cup, the Six Nations and Grand Slam titles snd recently reached the world T20 final – let alone the myriad of individual world champions we can boast – and we are in danger of becoming the sporting capital of the world.

If this can be argued then so can Sheffield lay claim to being the sporting capital of Britain right now.

Willett comes from Sheffield, as does Jamie Vardy, Joe Root, Jess Ennis and boxing world champ Kell Brook. Joshua learnt his trade at the Sheffield-based Institute of Sport as well.

Yorkshire enjoyed a momentous London Olympics. Now we can narrow it down even further. Sheffield, as it prepares for the World Snooker Championships, truly is the sporting epicentre of Britain.
