Eubank Jr close to securing Golovkin fight in September
British middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr is close to securing a mega fight with WBA (super), WBC and IBF champion Gennady Golovkin which, if made, could take place in September.
Golovkin is considered by many people as one of the leading pound-for-pound boxers in the sport. The Kazakhstani has a perfect record of 35-0 with 32 of those wins coming inside the distance. He first won a world title in 2010 and since then has been able to make 16 successful defenses in the division.
If a date it set for the contest, it wonÛªt be the first time that Golovkin has met a British opponent. In 2013 he fought Matthew Macklin in Connecticut for his WBA title. He was able to stop the Brit in the third round of that fight to secure the victory. Last year he also met Martin Murray in Monaco for the same belt. Murray was brave and went 11 rounds with the man from Kazakhstan before the referee stopped the fight with 50 seconds left on the clock in the penultimate round.
Triple G recently picked up the WBC belt in the division after Mexican Saul Alvarez failed to negotiate a clash between the two men in what would be the biggest fight of the year. Instead, Alvarez vacated the belt and will now face WBO light-middleweight champion Liam Smith where he is 1/10 with Betway Sports to win that fight and secure the title off the British boxer.
With Alvarez out of the picture in the short-term future, it now looks like Eubank Jr can take advantage as he is in poll position to be GolovkinÛªs next opponent this September.
Eubank Jr recently defended his British title against Tom Doran at the O2 Arena on the undercard of AnthonyÛªs JoshuaÛªs bout against Dominic Breazeale. That was the Brighton based boxerÛªs first defence of the title he won against Nick Blackwell earlier this year.
Son of the former middleweight world champion Chris Eubank Sr, the 26-year old has lost just once in his career so far. That loss came to current WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders where the split decision went the way of the Hertfordshire man who then later went on to win his world title with a victory over Irishman Andy Lee last year.
Eubank Jr recently signed a promotional deal with Eddie HearnÛªs Matchroom Boxing. He has made it clear for a long time that he has been eying a fight with Golovkin, one of the reasons he signed for Hearn was due to the reassurances that he would chase a deal with Triple GÛªs team.
Hearn is confident the fight can be made and it could take place in the UK. Golovkin has stated in the past that he willing to travel anywhere in the world, including the UK where there were some discussions about Triple G facing Carl Froch at Wembley.
