Champion Adam Webb has promised to treat his “caddy and chauffeur” – his dad Cliff – to share his fabulous prize after winning the trip of a lifetime to the Costa Brava.
The 27-year-old 14-handicapper from Stoke Park took the honours as he shot an impressive 38 Stableford points in tough conditions in the grand final of A Taste of Costa Brava, hosted at Old Thorns Manor Hotel Golf & Country Estate.
It was enough for a three-shot victory over his nearest challenger – Alec Burgess from Mid Sussex Golf Club – and saw Webb earn a luxury five-night stay including rounds of golf at PGA Catalunya (both at the Stadium and Tour courses), Golf D’Aro – Mas Nou, Golf de Pals and Gualta. The prize includes flights, airport transfers provided by Maype and also features a hotel stay split between Hotel Camiral and NM Suites Hotel.
But after doing his bit to help his son to victory, Webb senior has earned more than the usual caddy fee of 10-per-cent cut of the winner’s cheque and has sealed his place to join his son in enjoying the hospitality and playing some of the outstanding golf courses in the region.
Webb said: “My dad was acting as my chauffeur and my caddy for the day so he has probably nailed it down to come with me now!
“It’s nice to have someone to talk to about what I’m trying to do before the shots. I think having a caddy makes a world of difference – if I could do it for every round I play, I would. Dad definitely played his part.
“PGA Catalunya is one of the courses that has been on my bucket list for a while. I’ve had a few mates who have played down there and said it’s absolutely unbelievable. I can’t wait.”
Webb got off to a flying start with 22 points on the front nine and then held it together on the back nine despite a few setbacks.
He said: “It’s a course you have to plot your way around and it was tough conditions. But I knew anything around 36 points would be up there with a chance. It’s great to win.”
Webb was among a field of 24 qualifiers for the final with amateur golfers from Camberley Heath Golf Club, Golf At Goodwood, Cranleigh Golf & Country Club, Hindhead, Broke Hill, Cottesmore, Petersfield, North Hants, Liphook, Mid Sussex and Stoke Park having earned their place at their respective club.
The runner-up prize was a two-night stay for two persons at Hotel Perelada and Hotel Torremirona. Also included is two rounds of golf at Golf Club Peralada, one round at Golf Torremirona, two passes to the Casino Perelada.
Ingrid Casado of Costa Brava Tourism said: “Congratulations to our winners. It was a great day and a fantastic opportunity to spend time with these golfers and explain some more about the destination. We look forward to welcoming Adam and Alec but we also hope to see all of the competitors in the Costa Brava in the future.
“We hope the tournament will become an annual event and look forward to helping this grow to help continue to promote the destination in the coming years.”
Situated 100 kilometres north of Barcelona in a region nestling between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the waters of the Mediterranean, the Costa Brava enjoys average annual temperatures of 16.5Cᵒ and offers an array of first-class golf experiences in a natural and unspoilt environment.
