Some Early Picks for the Grand National 2018
Tuesday 10th April 2018
Of all the horse racing events to look forward to this year, the Grand National is the one that draws the attention of the casual fans. As an individual event, there is nothing that can quite match the combination of history and drama provided by the great race at Aintree. From the legendary races of Red Rum and L’Escargot to modern-day history like Tony McCoy’s win on Don’t Push it or Mon Mome’s 100/1 triumph, the National really does deliver everything.
This year’s race will take place on Saturday 14th April at 17.15pm. As usual, there is expected to be around 40 runners to take on the challenge of over four gruelling miles and 30 tough fences. While some claim that picking a winner in the National is a lottery, there is a science behind picking a winner and also something to be said for getting in an early bet on the action. For the moment, here are some (early) picks that could really make a charge at Grand National glory:
Total Recall: 11/1
Starting with many people’s favourite, Total Recall will offer a chance for trainer Willie Mullins to win his first Grand National in 13 years. Mullins is widely regarded as one of the best jumps/national hunt trainers of the 21st century, but he has found it tough to find sustained success in the Grand National. Total Recall could be his best chance in a long while.
Blaklion: 14/1
Most bookmakers are finding it difficult to split Blaklion and Total Recall in the odds. He came fourth in the race last year – showing he can handle the travails of the tough course – and looks in perfect condition to finish in the money places once again. Betfair’s price of 14/1 is nearly 40% bigger than some other major bookmakers. That could look like a bargain come race time.
Cause of Causes: 20/1
There are some horses in the world who are ‘better’ than Cause of Causes, but there are none in a position to have a unique year quite like Gordon Elliott’s 10-year-old. He will sure be at the Cheltenham Festival (13th-16th March), where he will be aiming for his fourth Festival win. That will put him among the all-time greats. If he can add a Grand National title in the same season, we will have something really special on our hands. He could really do it too.
Tiger Roll: 50/1
Another excellent horse from Gordon Elliot’s Gigginstown operation, Tiger Roll is something of an enigma. He is a horse capable of ‘turning it on’ in a big race when he is unfancied, yet he can let punters down when he is among the favourites. The price is about right at 50/1 for a horse who could win this just as easily as he could fail to finish. Definitely the kind of candidate to use a bookmaker’s free bet promotion on.
Buywise: 50/1
Somewhat like Tiger Roll, Buywise is also capable of landing a big race win and is a better horse than his record shows. He has experience of the Grand National before when coming 12th in 2016. Don’t let that put you off though, even finishing the race is considered an achievement. Buywise could be a really good each-way pick at this early stage for the National.
