It was a game that could have put the Scottish title to bed before the strains of Auld Lang Syne were even started, but Ryan Jack’s deflected strike ensured that the two Glasgow giants entered the winter break on a relatively level footing.

The green half of the city will point to a superior goal difference and a game in hand, whilst the blue half will claim that the all important momentum is now on their side. Either way they are both looking to the next derby clash in the spring of 2019 as the potentially key defining moment of the season.

However, perhaps they should be advised to cast their mind back a couple of years and look South across the border at another possibility – Kilmarnock could win the League!

Yes, the East Ayrshire team, who are the oldest professional club in Scotland, could actually become the Leicester City of Scotland and bring the title back to Rugby Park for the first time since their only previous win in 1965. If you need any more convincing as to the possibility, then perhaps you should know that Killie are already the unofficial Scottish champions of 2018 gathering more points in the calendar year than either Rangers or Celtic.

So is a unique chapter in Scottish football history about to be written, unlikely, yes – but 5,000 to 1 unlikely, no. So whilst most observers will look to Glasgow for this year’s SPL champions if a football miracle does happen, remember where you read about it first.
