Ernesto Valverde has agreed to an extension to his Barcelona contract after enjoying a successful season this campaign.

The Spaniard has extended his contract a further year to the finale of the 2019-20 season with the option to activate this another year.

Barcelona announced the deal in a tweet earlier today.

Valverde has won three trophies so far at Barca, one La Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season and a Spanish Super Cup in 2018.

In total he has managed 96 games in charge of the Blaugrana, winning 65, drawing 22 and suffering nine defeats. Lionel Messi is unsurprisingly the top scorer under Valverde, amassing 74 goals whilst forward partner Luis Suarez has 47.

His team had scored in 37 successive games until their recent goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao whilst Barca almost went unbeaten during the 2017/18 La Liga season but fell to a defeat against Levante in their penultimate fixture.

Barcelona are currently top of La Liga and sit six points clear of rivals Real Madrid in second place with fifteen games remaining. They face their rivals in the second leg of the Copa del Rey on the 27th February with the game evenly poised after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Camp Nou.

They also remain in the Champions League and face Lyon in their first leg at the Lyon Olympic Stadium on 19th February before welcoming the French side back to Barcelona for the return fixture on 13th March.
