The Manchester Half Marathon has today announced Tommy’s as its new title partner and headline charity for 2020, with funds set to make a vital impact to the local area.
The North West’s biggest half will next year be known as the 2020 Tommy’s Manchester Half Marathon, with money raised going towards the charity’s work at St Mary’s Hospital. The work undertaken at the Tommy’s Research Centre and Rainbow Clinic, St Mary’s Hospital has driven landmark understanding of stillbirth and cared for local pregnant women after previous stillbirth, reducing stillbirth rate in the Manchester region by 34% since 2010.
Research shows 1 in 4 UK women lose a baby during pregnancy or birth. The Tommy’s Research Centre based at St Mary’s hospital opened in 2001 and has around 100 clinicians and scientists working to discover the causes of baby loss with a vision to making pregnancy safer and ensuring all Manchester-based families have access to the best maternity care. The Manchester Half partnership aims to fund research and drive awareness of both a local and national cause.
Jane Brewin, Tommy’s Chief Executive, said, “Tommy’s is delighted to partner with the 2020 Manchester Half Marathon. We’ll be bringing our enthusiasm and experience in creating an outstanding race day runner experience to an event which is growing in participation and popularity.
“This event is close to our hearts as Tommy’s Manchester Research Centre has been working to make pregnancy and birth safer for families in the Greater Manchester area and beyond since 2009. We rely on the generosity of the public to fund our work, so the 2020 Manchester Half Marathon will help us to raise the £300,000 needed to continue our vital research into the causes of baby loss and to improve maternity care for every family, every baby, everywhere. We’re excited to work with the Manchester Half Marathon team and Greater Manchester community to make the 2020 event the most successful yet.”
This year will see 15,000 runners complete the 13.1 mile route around Greater Manchester, making it one of the biggest charity fundraising initiatives on the Manchester calendar. Organisers expect next year’s event to attract even more runners, making a valuable contribution to the important work of Tommy’s and other associated charities.
Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, the organisation behind the Manchester Half Marathon, said, “Mancunians feel a real sense of ownership of the Manchester Half and its incredibly important to us to partner with causes that supports Greater Manchester. Tommy’s Manchester Research Centre has a huge impact on the local community, helping to support countless families, change lives and drive understanding of baby loss. We’re proud to be partnering with Tommy’s and hope our event can make a tangible difference to families in Greater Manchester as a result”.
The Tommy’s Manchester Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 11th October 2020. A limited number of early entries will be made available immediately after the 2019 Wiggle Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday 9th October, for those who wish to support Tommy’s. General entries will then open on Tuesday 11th October 2019
