Former Australia player Dean Jones said that if MS Dhoni has to make a return in the Indian team, he needs to have a good season in the Indian Premier League. Otherwise, it would be difficult for him to return. The 13th edition of IPL will take place in UAE and will start on September 19.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni had last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand where they lost to them.
“At the moment it looks like the Indian selectors are going with Rishabh Pant and K.L. Rahul,” Jones told The Times of India. “If Dhoni has a wonderful IPL then he’s away, but if he doesn’t do well in the next IPL then perhaps his door is definitely shut. But, he’s left the door open.”
But Dean Jones also said that Dhoni still has the ability to represent the country. He further stated that India needs a finisher and he thinks that Hardik Pandya has the ability to play that role.
“He (Dhoni) is an absolute superstar. He is a ‘great’. So, I have always felt, with the greats, to tend to let them do what they want to do, but at the moment they are leaning towards K.L. Rahul and Rishabh Pant. But, India’s biggest problem is still a finisher. Who is your finisher? Hardik-Pandya — yes. Just comes down to your balance — who’s hot and who’s not,” Jones shared.
However, not only Jones, former India player Gautam Gambhir too thinks MS Dhoni must continue his international cricket as long he feels he is fit and in the form to enjoy the game. He again said that age is just a number for him and Dhoni has been hitting the ball really well. He also claimed that if Dhoni thinks that he can still win the game for the country while batting at six and seven, he must continue. Notably, Dhoni is the only captain to win all ICC trophies.
